Hey everyone! I’m finally taking my Nikon D850 on a two-week trip through Europe, and I’m a bit nervous about the logistics. It’s such a powerful (and heavy!) body, so I want to make sure I’m prepared without overpacking. I’m already looking into rugged XQD cards and maybe a more comfortable neck strap to handle the weight during long days of walking. I’m also wondering about the best way to manage batteries since high-res shooting can be pretty demanding. Should I prioritize a lightweight travel tripod or is that overkill for this setup? What are your must-have travel accessories to keep a D850 kit manageable and productive on the road?
+1 to what was said earlier about the official batteries, it's literally the best advice. For the weight tho, skip the big tripod and grab a SmallRig Tabletop Mini Tripod for like $20. It's wayyy cheaper than carbon ones and honestly fits in a pocket. I used one in Italy and it handled the D850 just fine! Also, try the Altura Photo Rapid Fire Camera Neck Strap to save cash. gl!
yo honestly carrying a d850 all day is kind of a nightmare if youre not prepared... i tried using the stock strap and it was honestly such a letdown, my neck was killing me by lunch. basically you've got a few options for the weight. i'd compare the Peak Design Slide Camera Strap SL-BK-3 ($65) vs using the Peak Design Capture Camera Clip V3 ($75). honestly? the clip is way better cuz it puts the weight on your backpack strap instead of your neck. i mean, i also tried a cheap "travel" tripod, the Manfrotto Element MII Aluminum Travel Tripod, but it was unfortunately not as good as expected... it felt way too flimsy for a heavy camera and just wobbled in the wind. seriously, so frustrating. for power, i really suggest the Nikon EN-EL15c Rechargeable Li-ion Battery over third-party ones. i tried some cheap ones and they were basically trash and died way too fast. also, for storage, i use the Sony Professional XQD G Series 120GB Memory Card and its worth the price for the speed, right? i guess the tripod is overkill for a city trip? anyway gl!
TL;DR: Stick with official batteries and solid readers to avoid gear failure. stumbled upon this and ngl, the D850 is a beast but unfortunately it's sooo power hungry. Generic batteries were such a letdown... iirc official ones last way longer. Get the Nikon EN-EL15c Rechargeable Li-ion Battery. Also, check out 'Photography Life' for technical setup guides. Plus, the ProGrade Digital CFexpress Type B and XQD USB 3.2 Gen 2 Dual-Slot Reader is way more reliable than cheap dongles that disconnect. gl!
The D850 is a total beast in the field and I have been really satisfied with how reliable it is, never had any complaints about it holding up. This whole situation actually reminds me of when my buddy went to the Dolomites with a similar setup and it turned into a massive ordeal. He was so focused on the gear logistics that he forgot to check his mounting plates before we left. We get all the way up to this incredible viewpoint after a four-hour hike, and he realizes his plate is sitting on his desk back home. He spent the entire sunset trying to balance his heavy camera on a pile of jagged rocks using his spare socks as padding. It was pretty painful to watch him struggle while the sky was turning these amazing colors, and he barely got a single sharp shot because the wind kept knocking his improvised setup over. He was so frustrated the rest of the night... just a total mess.
