I recently upgraded to a Nikon Z7II and I'm planning a landscape photography trip to the Swiss Alps next month. I really need a solid travel tripod that won't break my back on long hikes but can still reliably support the weight of my Z mount glass, especially the 24-120mm f/4. I’ve been eyeing some carbon fiber options to keep my carry-on light, but I'm worried about stability during long exposures in windy conditions. I’ve seen some buzz about the Peak Design and Benro Tortoise series, but I'm torn. Does anyone have a specific recommendation that perfectly balances portability with enough sturdiness for the Z series? What’s your go-to setup when traveling light?

Ok so I basically went through this same struggle for a trip to Iceland last year lol. I didn't wanna drop $600, so I grabbed a budget carbon setup that works well and holds my Z7II steady. * Sirui T-1205 Carbon Fiber Tripod
* Sirui E-10 Ball Head Honestly, I've had no complaints and it weighs NOTHING—just hang ur pack on the hook for those windy Alpine shots and you're golden!!

Respectfully, I'd consider another option before you settle on the Peak Design. See, most travel tripods compromise stiffness by using skinny leg sections and tall center columns to save weight. Why it matters? On a high-res Z7II, even tiny vibrations from Alpine wind will ruin ur long exposures. That center column basically acts like a sail! I'd suggest these instead: - Leofoto LS-284C Ranger Series Tripod with LH-30 Ball Head: This is a 'no-column' design. It’s way more rigid cuz the legs are wider at the apex. Honestly, it’s a tank for its weight and holds a 24-120mm easily.
- Gitzo GT1545T Series 1 Traveler Carbon Fiber Tripod: It uses Carbon eXact tubing which is fantastic at dampening micro-vibrations. The Leofoto is beefier for wind, while the Gitzo is the king of packability. I love the Peak Design Travel Tripod Carbon Fiber for city trips, but for the Alps? Id go Leofoto. gl!

oh man, i feel u! i was in a similar spot last year hiking the Dolomites with my Z7 and was highkey worried about weight but didn't wanna spend a fortune. I ended up getting a carbon fiber setup from Benro and honestly, it’s been a lifesaver. It’s light enough for long treks but sturdy enough for my Z glass (at least it's been fine for my 24-120mm). What I learned is that stability in wind isn't just about the tripod weight... basically, you just gotta hang ur bag from the center hook and it's solid as a rock. Saved me so much money compared to those $800 options! But real quick—what’s ur budget lookin like for this? And do u prioritize how small it packs down or the max height? Knowing that would help narrow it down cuz some travel legs are still kinda bulky in a carry-on tbh. gl!
