Gimbal recommendation for Nikon ZR?

Hey everyone,

So, I've recently picked up a Nikon Z R (the retro-styled full-frame, not sure if anyone calls it ZR, but that's what I'm going with, haha!) and I'm really loving it for stills. But I'm now trying to branch out into some video work, mainly short films and maybe some travel vlogging down the line. The IBIS is decent, but definitely not enough for the kind of smooth, cinematic shots I'm aiming for.

That's where the gimbal comes in! I'm completely new to the world of gimbals, and there are SO many options out there, it's honestly overwhelming. I've been doing some research, but I'm struggling to figure out which one would be the best fit specifically for the Z R.

I'm particularly concerned about a couple of things: Firstly, weight capacity. The Z R with a lens like the 28mm f/2.8 or even the 40mm f/2 is pretty light, but I might eventually want to use heavier lenses like a 24-70mm f/4. So, future-proofing is a consideration. Secondly, compatibility. I've heard some gimbals can be a pain to balance with Nikon cameras, and I definitely want something that's relatively easy to set up and use. Ideally, it would have some kind of follow focus capability too, even if it's basic.

I'm not looking to break the bank – a mid-range option would be ideal. I’d say my budget is around $300-$500. I'm more concerned about getting something that works reliably and is relatively easy to use with my specific camera. I’ve seen a lot of recommendations for DJI and Zhiyun, but I'm hoping to get some feedback from people who actually use a gimbal with a Nikon Z R (or similar lightweight Nikon full-frame). Any recommendations for specific models that you've found work well, and any tips on balancing it properly with the Z R? Any input will be greatly appreciated!

Hey! I totally get the gimbal overwhelm! I've been there. For your Z R, I'd actually suggest looking at the Moza AirCross 2. It's fantastic for lighter setups and fits right into your budget! I've used it with my Z5 (very similar weight!) and even with the 24-70mm f/4 it balances pretty easily. Plus, it has decent follow focus options. It's amazing, and I think it'll be a perfect fit for you! Let me know if you have more questions!

Hey! I see you're deep in the gimbal research, and yeah, it's a lot! The Moza and Weebill are good shouts, but have you looked at used options? Seriously, eBay and FB Marketplace can be AMAZING for finding slightly older gimbals in great condition for WAY less!

I actually snagged a used DJI Ronin-SC for like $250 – it handles my Z5 (similar weight to your Z R) perfectly with my 35mm and even the heavier 24-70mm! Just be sure to check the seller's feedback and ask lots of questions! Watch some YouTube videos on balancing *before* you buy, so you know what to look for in terms of condition! Also, DJI's app is really user-friendly, which is a HUGE plus when you're starting out. Good luck with the hunt! Let me know if you have any other questions, happy to help if I can!

Hey! I hear you on the gimbal search – it's a rabbit hole! While the Moza AirCross 2 is decent, have you considered the Weebill-S? It often gets overlooked but might be a better fit for future-proofing, especially with heavier lenses.

Technically, it handles up to around 6.6 lbs, which gives you headroom. Plus, it has a surprisingly strong motor for its size. I've found it balances pretty easily with my Z6 (similar weight to your Z R). The TransMount follow focus system is sold separately, but it works pretty well if you decide you need it. Just a thought!
