Hey everyone! I’ve been shooting with my Nikon D850 for a few months now, and while I absolutely love the image quality, I’m finally hitting a wall where I need a solid external flash. Since the D850 doesn't have a pop-up flash, I’ve been relying entirely on ambient light, which just isn't cutting it for the indoor event work and evening portraits I've been picking up lately.
I’ve been doing some research, but I’m a bit torn on which direction to go. I know the Nikon SB-5000 is often considered the gold standard for this body because of the radio control and built-in cooling system, but that price tag is definitely hefty. On the other hand, I’ve seen a lot of people rave about third-party options like the Godox V1 or the V860III because of the lithium batteries and faster recycle times. I really need something that won't overheat during a long reception and provides consistent TTL accuracy so I'm not constantly fiddling with manual settings while things are happening fast.
I’m looking to spend around $300-$500, but I’m willing to stretch if the reliability is truly worth it for this specific pro-grade body. For those of you using the D850, do you find that native Nikon speedlights perform significantly better with the AF system, or are the modern third-party options just as reliable? What is your go-to high-quality flash recommendation for this camera?
I went through this last year. Honestly, I’ve had a pretty rough time with third-party gear. I tried the Godox V1-N Flash for Nikon, but unfortunately had issues with TTL accuracy—not as good as expected. Then the Godox V860III-N Speedlight for Nikon basically overheated on me... highkey stressful. I eventually realized the Nikon SB-5000 AF Speedlight was the only one that stayed reliable. For me, saving money just wasn't worth the risk!!

Sooo, I went through this last year when I first got my D850. I totally get the hesitation with the Nikon SB-5000 AF Speedlight price tag... it's like, do I *really* need to spend that much?? Honestly, I started with a used Nikon SB-910 Speedlight because it was way cheaper and I figured it would play nicer with the D850's AF system than the cheap clones. It was basically solid for a while, but the recycle times on AA batteries are lowkey painful when you're shooting a fast reception.
I actually tried to switch to the Godox V1-N Flash for Nikon to get that lithium battery life everyone talks about. It's kinda hit or miss tho? Like, the TTL accuracy just wasn't as *consistent* as the native Nikon gear. I found myself checking the back of the screen way more than I wanted to. Plus, the AF assist beam on third-party flashes sometimes misses with the D850's focus points in low light... highkey stressful when everyone is dancing. I ended up going back to native gear just for the peace of mind, even if it hurt my wallet. It's a tough balance between the budget and just wanting the thing to work EVERY time. Good luck with the search!
