Hey everyone! I’ve been relying on the built-in pop-up flash on my Nikon D7500 for way too long, and it’s finally time for an upgrade. I’m mostly shooting indoor family events and some portraits, so I really need something that can bounce off ceilings to get softer light. I’m a bit torn between the premium price of official Nikon Speedlights like the SB-700 and more affordable third-party options like Godox. I definitely need TTL support, and High-Speed Sync (HSS) would be a huge plus for outdoor fills. What are your top recommended external flashes that play nicely with Nikon DSLRs? Is the official brand really worth the extra investment for a hobbyist?

Ok so, I totally get where ur coming from... I used to rely on the pop-up flash on my D7200 until I realized it was basically ruining my indoor shots with that harsh, direct light. I initially bought the Nikon SB-700 AF Speedlight cuz I wanted that "official" guarantee. It’s a decent option and the TTL is very consistent, but it really burns through AA batteries during long events.

I eventually tried the Godox V860III-N TTL Flash for Nikon and honestly, it’s been a game changer for my D7500. It supports HSS and TTL perfectly. The technical upside is the lithium battery—it recycles in about 1.5 seconds at full power, which is way faster than the Nikon. If you want softer light for portraits, the Godox V1-N Round Head Flash for Nikon is also great due to the round head design. It depends on your needs, but the Nikon brand is barely worth the extra investment for hobbyists now.

Lesson learned? Don't fear third-party. Godox works just as well for half the price. gl!!

Seconding the recommendation above! I spent years sticking only to name-brand gear cuz I was scared of compatibility issues, but honestly, the value you get from third-party stuff now is insane. I've been using Godox for about 5 years with my Nikon bodies and I'm seriously satisfied with how they perform.

If ur looking to save some cash but still need HSS and TTL, here is what I suggest:

* Godox V860III-N TTL Li-ion Flash for Nikon - This one is GREAT because it uses a rechargeable lithium battery instead of AAs. It recycles so fast and saves a ton of money on batteries over time.
* Godox TT685II-N TTL Flash for Nikon - Basically the same features but uses AAs. It's super affordable for a hobbyist.

In my experience, official Speedlights are built like tanks, but I'd rather spend the extra $200 on a nice prime lens! gl!
