Honestly I'm so done with these 'budget' tripods that claim to be professional grade but fall apart the second they see a little bit of weather. I just got back from a week in Olympic National Park and my current Manfrotto—wont even name the model because it makes me so mad—basically disintegrated in the damp air. The leg locks got all gritty after like two days and then the center column started wobbling while I was trying to get some long exposures of the coast and yeah half my shots are blurry trash. I use a Nikon D850 with a 24-70mm f/2.8 which isnt exactly light but its not a massive telephoto either so I dont see why its so hard to find something that doesnt shake like a leaf in a light breeze.
Im looking for something that can actually survive being strapped to a backpack and dragged through some mud and rain without dying on me. I need something for my next trip to Iceland in October so I dont have a ton of time to mess around with returns or cheap replacements that are just gonna fail again.
My requirements for this are:
I looked at the Peak Design travel tripod but I've heard mixed things about it being shaky with heavy DSLR bodies? I dont know if I trust it. Does anyone actually use a heavy Nikon setup on a travel tripod that doesnt feel like it's gonna tip over in the wind? I'm just so tired of wasting money on gear that lets me down right when the light is getting good...
I went through three tripods before landing on the Benro Tortoise 34C Columnless Carbon Fiber Tripod with GX35 Ball Head for my own D850 setup. Im really satisfied with the stability since there is no center column to wobble around in the wind. It handles the 24-70mm easily and cost way less than the RRS or Gitzo stuff I was looking at. Works well for me.
Just catching up on this thread. Regarding what #1 said about "I went through three tripods before landing on..."
