What are the absolute must-have things I need to buy for a new Nikon Z8? I just bought one because I'm going to Iceland next month and I wanted the best photos possible but now I'm looking at it and I feel totally overwhelmed and honestly kind of scared I'm gonna mess it up. I saved up forever for this but I didn't realize how much extra stuff you need like what kind of memory card even fits in this thing?? I saw some that cost like 200 dollars which is insane but then I saw others that are cheap so I'm confused.

Also do I need a special screen protector or a specific bag that fits it? I have about 500 bucks left in my budget for accessories and I dont want to waste it on stuff I dont need. I'm a complete beginner like I've only ever used my iPhone so sorry if these are really basic questions. Is the battery it comes with enough for a whole day of hiking or should I buy three more? I'm really worried about the sensor getting dirty too because I heard it doesnt have a cover or something? I'm just spiraling a bit looking at all the options on Amazon and I dont want to get the wrong thing and ruin my trip...

The Z8 is a pro-level tool, so you really need to be careful about the accessories you pick. if you use cheap components, youre gonna bottleneck the processor or worse, lose your files.

  • Memory: You need CFexpress Type B. Dont waste money on slow SD cards for this body. I highly recommend the ProGrade Digital 325GB CFexpress Type B Cobalt because it has the sustained write speeds needed for the high-res files youll be shooting in Iceland. Cheap cards often fail during high-speed bursts or high-resolution video recording.
  • Power: Iceland is cold, and cold kills lithium-ion performance. One battery wont last a full day of hiking if youre using the EVF a lot. Pick up at least one spare Nikon EN-EL15c Rechargeable Li-ion Battery. Make sure it is the c version for the best capacity and in-camera charging support.
  • Protection: You might want to consider the ULBTER Nikon Z8 Tempered Glass Screen Protector to prevent scratches. For the sensor, the Z8 actually has a protective shield. You just have to go into the Setup Menu and enable Sensor Shield Behavior at power off. Its a lifesaver when changing lenses in the wind. Stick to these basics first. The card and battery will eat most of your 500 bucks, but theyre the only things that actually matter for keeping the camera running in the field. Be careful with generic chargers too... stick to USB-C PD if youre charging on the go. Honestly, just take it slow and learn the menu before you leave.

To add to the point above: unfortunately, the Z8's battery life is a bit of a letdown for long landscape sessions. Especially in Iceland where the wind and cold just tank your voltage. I had issues with my last trip where I ran out of juice before sunset... it was a total mess.

  • Anker 737 Power Bank 140W PowerCore 24K - this is crucial because it supports the 15V/3A PD charging spec the Z8 requires to actually charge while in use.
  • SmallRig L-Bracket for Nikon Z8 3942 - if youre doing landscapes, you need this for fast switching to vertical shots on a tripod without messing up your composition.
  • Peak Design Shell Camera Cover Medium - helps keep the abrasive volcanic dust and salt spray out of the dials. It sucks you gotta spend more after dropping 4k on a body, but the external power bank is way more efficient than carrying five separate batteries imo. Just make sure the cable is rated for 100W or the camera wont even recognize the source. Youre gonna love the RAW files this thing produces tho... honestly the dynamic range is just next level.

Unfortunately, cheap cards are a total trap. I had a generic brand fail in the cold once and lost everything... it was devastating. For Iceland, you need reliability.
