What are the best tripod brands for heavy Nikon telephoto lenses because im honestly fed up with my current setup vibrating every time I breathe on it. I took my D850 and the 500mm f/4 out to Glacier last week and it was a total disaster. Every time a slight breeze picked up the whole thing would just shimmy and shake like a leaf and I ended up with a memory card full of blurry junk. I thought I bought a decent set of legs but clearly I was wrong and it is so frustrating spending thousands on glass just to have a tripod ruin every single shot. I am actually ready to just throw this thing in the lake and start over honestly.
I need something that can actually handle the weight and the torque of a long lens without sagging or taking five seconds to stop shaking after I touch the shutter. I have heard people talk about Gitzo and Really Right Stuff but are they actually worth that insane price tag or is it just branding? I am looking to spend maybe $900 or $1000 on just the legs since I already have a decent gimbal head but I need to make sure whatever I buy is rock solid. I have a big trip to Alaska coming up in about three weeks so I need to get this sorted fast before I am stuck in the tundra with blurry bears and a broken heart.
Is there anything else I should look at besides the big names? Maybe Leofoto or Benro or something like that? I have heard mixed things about those being clones but if they work as well as the high end stuff I am all ears. Honestly I just want something that wont make me want to cry when I look at my RAW files at the end of the day. My current legs have these twist locks that keep slipping too which is just another headache I do not need when I am trying to track a moving subject. Just looking for something that is actually stable enough for a big heavy Nikon setup...
Saw this today and honestly, that 500mm setup is incredible! Quick question tho, are you hiking miles or staying near the vehicle in Alaska? You need massive leg diameters to handle that torque and kill those vibrations...
Saw your post and ngl, that Glacier story is painful... i totally get the frustration of gear failing when you need it most. Before I throw out a bunch of names tho, how much hiking are you actually doing in Alaska? Like, are we trekking miles through the brush or mostly shooting near the road? That really changes whether we look at weight-saving carbon or beefy aluminum. You dont actually need to drop $1k to get stability. The Leofoto LM-364C Summit Series Carbon Fiber Tripod is basically a clone of the high-end stuff but it performs way above its price point. Its rock solid for big glass. If you wanna save even more, something like the Benro TMA48C Mach3 Carbon Fiber Tripod is a workhorse that leaves plenty of cash for extra batteries. Honestly, the gap between the boutique brands and these clones has closed a lot lately... you might be surprised how much tripod you can get for $500.
I once saw a 600mm hit the dirt when a cheap leg snapped. Over the years Ive learned to avoid:
