I'm honestly so frustrated looking for a solid tripod for my Nikon 500mm f/4. It's a total tank and my current setup just wobbles like crazy whenever there's a breeze. I looked into the Gitzo Systematic series because everyone swears by them but $1200 for just legs is basically my entire rent. Then I saw some guys recommending the Leofoto LM series as a cheaper alternative but half the reviews say the quality control is hit or miss and I really dont want my gear crashing into the mud.
I need something that:
I'm heading to the Everglades in three weeks for a birding trip and need this sorted ASAP. Is there a middle ground that actually works?...
Tbh you don't need to drop $1200 on a Gitzo to get decent stability for that 500mm f/4. Dealing with a lens that big is all about leg diameter. I've been using the Benro Mach3 Series 4 Carbon Fiber Tripod TMA48CXL for a while now. It has a 44lb load capacity which handles the Nikon gear and a gimbal without any flex. It feels super solid even when it's gusty. Another solid pick is the Innorel RT90C Carbon Fiber Tripod 40mm Tube. It's basically a tank and costs way less. Those 40mm leg tubes are the secret sauce for killing vibrations in the wind. Finishing isnt as premium as the luxury brands, but for swamp shooting it's fine. Pair either with the Wimberley WH-200 Gimbal Tripod Head II and you're good. Both should stay under your budget and wont kill your back on a 3 mile hike.
