What are the actual must-have accessories I need for a new Nikon Z6II that I might be overlooking coming from the DSLR world? Ive been shooting on my trusty D850 for years but I just jumped over to the Z system because I need that eye-autofocus for a big destination wedding Im shooting in Oregon next month. Ive got about $600 left in my budget for extras after buying the body and the 24-70 f/4 kit.
I already know about the FTZ II adapter since I have a ton of F-mount glass Im not ready to sell yet, but the memory card situation is throwing me for a loop. Do I really need to shell out for those expensive CFexpress Type B cards or is an XQD enough for backup? Also Ive heard the battery life on mirrorless is kind of a lie compared to the old bodies so Im wondering if the MB-N11 battery grip is worth the bulk or if I should just buy like four spare EN-EL15c batteries and call it a day.
These are the things Im looking at right now:
The EVF is gorgeous but Im worried about the screen getting scratched up in my bag since it tilts. Are people still using those glass screen protectors or do they mess with the touch sensitivity too much? Im trying to keep my kit relatively light since Ill be hiking for some of these shots so I dont want to overpack unnecessary junk.
Honestly, I made the same jump from the D850 and while the autofocus is magic, the battery life is unfortunately a huge step down. I really wanted to love the Nikon MB-N11 Power Battery Pack but it makes the camera so bulky for hiking and honestly it was a bit of a letdown for the price. Just grab three or four Nikon EN-EL15c Rechargeable Li-ion Battery instead. I tried some third-party batteries to save cash but they were not as good as expected and kept throwing incompatible errors right when I needed them, which was super stressful. For the cards, dont settle for XQD. I had issues with slow buffer clearing during weddings. You really need the speed of the ProGrade Digital CFexpress Type B Gold 128GB to keep up with that Oregon wedding pace. About the screen... yeah, it feels way more fragile than the D850. I use the Spigen Glas.tR Nano Slim for Nikon Z6II and touch sensitivity is still perfect, so dont skip it. It doesnt mess with the screen at all. TL;DR: Skip the heavy grip for hiking. Buy at least 3 genuine EN-EL15c batteries, one fast ProGrade CFexpress card, and a glass protector. Its a learning curve for sure but that eye-af makes it worth the headache! Let me know if you need help picking out a bag for those hikes too.
I stuck with XQD for a bit. Honestly, the transfer speeds for big weddings are brutal though. Be careful with your budget and grab a Sony MRW-G1 CFexpress Type B Card Reader if you go the CFexpress route. Also, I'd suggest the ULBTER Z6II Tempered Glass Screen Protector 3 Pack for hiking. It's cheap. It saved my screen from a nasty tripod scratch last week!
@Reply #1 - good point! Skip the bulk and invest in the Delkin Devices Black CFexpress Type B 128GB. Its 1240MB/s sustained write speed is technically superior to XQD for buffer clearing.
