Honestly so fed up with my old SB-700. It just cannot keep up when I am trying to use burst mode on my D850 for birds in the shade and i keep missing the money shot because the recycle time is just trash. So I was thinking maybe the SB-5000 is the only real answer but the price is insane.

Then my logic was like... maybe a Godox V1 for the lithium battery? But i heard the weather sealing is a joke and i have a trip to Costa Rica in three weeks. Budget is about 450 max. Just need something that actually fires when I press the shutter. What are you guys using that actually survives the woods?

Just caught this thread today. Honestly, I've been through a few flashes in the jungle and the humidity is no joke. I remember one time my gear just stopped firing because the moisture got into the battery compartment during a trek in Panama. It was a nightmare... basically lost some of my best shots that day. Since you're heading to Costa Rica, you might want to be really cautious with the Godox V1 head. That round design is cool but the seams feel a bit vulnerable in heavy rain to me. I would suggest looking at the Godox V860III-N TTL Li-Ion Flash for Nikon instead. It has that lithium battery which is a total game changer for those fast bursts compared to your SB-700. Just make sure to bring some silica packets for your gear bag. I have found that even pro gear can struggle when it is 90 percent humidity for a week straight. You will get the hang of it tho, you're gonna have an amazing trip!

If youre sick of the SB-700 recycle times, its mostly the AA batteries holding you back. For a 450 budget, you can get a killer setup without paying the Nikon tax. I have dragged my Godox gear through some pretty damp woods and it usually survives fine if you are careful.

  • Godox V860III-N TTL Li-Ion Flash for Nikon is my top pick here. The lithium pack is way faster than AAs. Youll get about 1.5s recycle at full power, and it is basically instant at lower settings.
  • If you really want to stick with Nikon, look for a used Nikon SB-910 Speedlight. Its older but built like a tank and handles heat way better than the 700.
  • Since you are worried about humidity, just grab a JJC RI-9 Camera Rain Cover. It covers the flash and body for cheap. The V860III is the smart choice. It leaves you enough cash for a spare battery.

My old unit fried in a tropical storm years ago. Since then, Ive stuck to my current setup because it actually keeps up with fast bursts without overheating in the humidity.
