Best portrait lens for my new Z6III? I'm thinking around $1000. What would you recommend for that budget?

I've had great results with the Nikkor Z 85mm f/1.8 S. Sharp, reliable, and within your budget. Consider professional fitting to ensure optimal performance.

Honestly, everyone is gonna tell you to get an 85mm, but if your looking for that reallyyy high-end compressed look, you should check out the Nikkor Z MC 105mm f/2.8 VR S. I mean, it’s technically a macro lens, but it’s basically one of the best portrait lenses Nikon has ever made. The extra reach at 105mm sorta flattens the face in a flattering way—it makes noses look smaller and really pops the subject from the background. Plus, it has built-in VR which works with the Z6III’s IBIS for crazy sharp shots. It’s right around that $1000 mark too, so it fits the budget perfectly. Its definitely a sleeper pick for portraits if you want something different from the standard 85mm crowd!

Tbh, I’m gonna have to respectfully disagree with the focus on just these standard focal lengths. In my line of work, I’ve learned to be way more cautious about just picking up what’s popular. I spent a week doing some pretty intense testing with my current setup vs some of the "standards" people usually suggest, and the benchmarks were eye-opening. Most people just look at center sharpness, but when ur doing high-end portraiture, things like field curvature and coma actually matter way more for the overall look. Basically, I found that the glass I ended up with—which isn't even the "standard" choice—delivered much better edge-to-edge consistency. Honestly, I’ve seen so many people grab the "best" lens and then struggle with focus breathing or CA in high-contrast stuff. I always tell people to look at the MTF charts first rather than just listening to the hype. Reliability is everything when ur on a paid shoot, and my current gear just hits those technical industry standards better than the stuff everyone usually talks about!!!

Don't sleep on adapted vintage glass! A clean Nikkor 105mm f/2.5 AI-S (around $300) might surprise you. Sharp, classic rendering, and saves you cash for lighting. Just be careful with manual focus!

Hey! For the Z6III, check out the used market! You can snag a fantastic Nikon 85mm f/1.8G for around $300 in great shape! Leaves plenty of budget for other stuff!
