I just picked up a Nikon Z6III and I'm planning some upcoming trips where I want to travel light but still get great shots. I'm torn between getting the 24-70mm f/4 for versatility or maybe the 35mm f/1.8 for low light and portability. I mainly shoot landscapes, street photography, and some portraits while traveling. What's been your go-to travel lens setup for the Z6III? Any third-party options worth considering? Really appreciate any real-world experience and sample shots if you've got them. Thanks in advance for the help!
Tbh I'm not 100% sure which way I'd go either, but I think I heard some people say that those smaller, compact primes are the way to go if ur trying to keep things light for street stuff. Not sure but IIRC, some users mentioned that the weight balance on the Z6III feels a bit different than the older bodies when you've got a heavier zoom on there. Someone told me that basically, if ur doing street photography, having a big lens makes u stand out way too much anyway. Honestly, I'm still trying to figure out my own travel kit things too, so I'm basically in the same boat. Maybe think about how much you actually hate swapping lenses in the middle of a trip? It's a tough call for sure.
Just picked up the Tamron 28-75mm f/2.8 - it's almost identical to its Nikon counterpart and delivers exceptional image quality at a very reasonable price. This is my top pick because of the combination of versatility, image quality, and relatively compact size. It's probably the most used focal length range you'll use, and you can shoot anything from wide-angle landscapes to longer focal-length portraits with this lens. Perfect for travel when you don't want to carry multiple lenses!
For travel, I'd go with the Nikon 24-200mm f/4-6.3 VR - one of Nikon's best-ever superzooms. It doesn't net a "Recommended" in some reviews, but that was a very close call complicated by how good the other lens choices are. As a one-lens solution, I'm willing to put up with some compromises to keep from carrying extra lenses and the lens changing that ensues. It's perfect for capturing richly detailed stills and movies, and as one of the most compact telephoto zooms available today, it easily fits into smaller kit bags.
To add to the point above: weight balance really is everything when you are on your feet all day. In my experience, if the kit feels front-heavy, my wrist is killing me by noon and the camera stays in the bag for the rest of the trip. I have tried many setups over the years and reliability is always what wins out for me.
Same setup here, love it
