I finally pulled the trigger on a used Z7 since I'm going to Iceland in like three weeks and I realized there's no way I'm lugging my old D750 and those heavy f/2.8 zooms across those glaciers. I'm literally panicking a bit because I spent most of my savings on the body and now I'm staring at lens options and feeling totally paralyzed.
I did a bunch of reading and everyone says the 14-30mm f/4 S is the go-to for travel landscapes because it's light and takes 82mm filters which is huge for me since I use NDs all the time. But then I started reading some threads where people are claiming it's soft in the corners compared to the 20mm f/1.8 prime. Now I'm worried if I get the zoom I'm gonna regret it when I see the files on a big screen later.
I have about $1000 left in my gear budget and I really need just one solid wide angle that can handle the wind and spray. Is the f/4 zoom actually sharp enough for the 45mp sensor or should I just stick to a prime and hope for the best with my framing? I really dont want to make the wrong choice this close to the trip...
Caught this today and wanted to ask... you shooting the aurora? That might sway things tho.
Dude, I was in your exact shoes when I hit the Ring Road last year! Honestly, the Nikon NIKKOR Z 14-30mm f/4 S is basically a miracle lens for travel. I took mine through some insane mist and spray at Skogafoss and it performed like a champ. Regarding that corner softness... unless you're pixel peeping, you wont even notice it on that high-res sensor if you stop down to f/8. Having that 14mm width is huge when you're standing in front of a massive glacier and cant back up! The Nikon NIKKOR Z 20mm f/1.8 S is definitely sharper, but in Iceland the weather is so nuts that swapping primes is a nightmare. You can find the zoom used for like $800 right now, which fits your budget perfectly. The 14-30mm is just so light and amazing for hiking. You'll love it!
