What are the absolute sharpest landscape lenses for the Sony a7R V right now? I just jumped from an old A7III and man the 61 megapixels are no joke... my old glass just looks kinda soft now when I zoom in to 100% and it is driving me crazy. I have a big trip to Iceland coming up in September and I really want to make sure I am getting the most out of this sensor for some huge wall prints I want to make back home in Denver. I did some digging and saw the Sony 20-70mm f4 G gets great reviews for being sharp across the frame but I am worried that f4 might be a compromise or that it wont actually resolve enough detail when things get really granular in the distance. Then I keep seeing people swear by the 35mm 1.4 GM as the sharpest thing ever made but I feel like 35mm is gonna be way too tight for the scale of the landscapes I am planning to shoot. Is the 12-24mm GM worth the insane price tag or should I be looking at something like the Sigma 14-24 Art? I have about 2500 dollars to spend so I could maybe do one really nice GM or maybe two slightly cheaper ones if they can actually keep up with the R V sensor. Just getting choice paralysis looking at all the charts and data online...
I've spent years chasing light in the Rockies, and honestly, overspending on GM glass doesnt always guarantee a better print. The Sigma 14-24mm f/2.8 DG DN Art has been my workhorse because its incredibly reliable and sharp as a tack. Tbh, just grab that and the Sony FE 20mm f/1.8 G. Youll save enough for a better tripod, which you'll actually need for those Iceland winds...
Just saw this. Unfortunately, I found the Sony FE 12-24mm f/4 G pretty disappointing on high-res bodies... it just looks mushy. For Iceland, you really need that corner-to-corner bite.
Honestly I am satisfied with the Sony FE 16-35mm f/4 PZ G. It works well stopped down and its a reliable, budget-friendly choice that wont leave you with any technical complaints.
To add to the point above: Amelia is spot on about that Sigma Art lens. It really holds up. Honestly though, you should just search for Sony a7R V landscape lens shootout on YouTube. There are a few creators who do really deep dives with side-by-side corner crops at 100 percent zoom. I saw one recently that basically answers every concern you have about resolving power for big prints. Generally speaking, Sigma usually wins on raw sharpness for the price, but Sony GM is way better if you're worried about the crazy Iceland weather. I usually keep my gear options in an amazon cart share to track prices before a big trip like that. Let me know if you can't find the video and I'll try to dig it up for you. TL;DR: Search YouTube for 61MP lens comparisons to see the crops for yourself. Sigma Art is the best value for sharpness, but Sony GM is built better for tough conditions.
