What is the best lens for street photography on a Fujifilm X-T5?

Ive been shooting Fuji for years now, started with the X-T20 then moved to the T3, and I finally pulled the trigger on the X-T5 a few months ago. The 40 megapixel sensor is incredible but it's making me second guess my old glass. I used to swear by the 23mm f2 because it's so tiny and weather sealed but I feel like I'm losing some of that crispness when I crop in now and the autofocus feels just a tiny bit sluggish for those fast snapshots on the sidewalk.

Im heading to Chicago next month for a week and really want to just stick to one prime lens for the whole trip. I usually do candid street stuff, lots of movement, maybe some architecture. I’ve been looking at the new 18mm 1.4 but I'm worried it might be too wide for my style or just too heavy for a 10-mile walking day.

My main requirements are:

  • Must be sharp enough to handle the 40MP sensor
  • Fast autofocus is a big deal since I don't like missing those fleeting moments
  • Budget is under 900 bucks if possible
  • Weather sealing is a huge plus because it'll probably rain or snow

I keep going back and forth between the 23mm 1.4 LM WR and maybe even the 33mm but then I wonder if the 33 is too tight for narrow city streets. Does the linear motor really make that much of a difference over the older f2 primes or am I just overthinking the resolution thing... maybe the f2 is still fine for street work even with the high MP count?

@Reply #1 - good point! honestly, i went through this exact same panic when I first picked up my X-T5 last year. those 40 megapixels really do show every single flaw in the older lenses, especially when you are pixel peeping after a long day of shooting. i spent weeks trying to decide if my old glass was still good enough or if i was just being a gear snob... turns out that the new linear motors actually make a massive difference for street stuff. i actually ended up getting the Fujifilm XF 18mm f/1.4 R LM WR and it basically lives on my camera now. I know you are worried about it being too wide for Chicago, but here is a quick tip: since the sensor resolution is so high, you can literally just set a custom button to the Digital Teleconverter mode. It crops the image to a 1.4x or 2.0x view right in the viewfinder. Because you have got so much detail to work with, a 1.4x crop on that 18mm still gives you plenty of megapixels for a solid print. It is basically like having an 18mm and a 25mm in one lens. price-wise, you can usually find it used or on sale right around that 800 or 900 dollar mark if you shop around. it is definitely heavier than the f2 version, but the autofocus is nearly instant. when people are darting across the street or the light is weird, that extra speed is a lifesaver. ngl the weather sealing has saved me more than once in some nasty rain too. definitely worth the weight imo.

Honestly, be careful with the 33mm in a city like Chicago... it might feel way too cramped on a narrow sidewalk. I would suggest the Fujifilm XF 23mm f/1.4 R LM WR because it's a safer bet for that 40MP sensor.

Regarding what #2 said, i totally agree. I felt that same panic but honestly im pretty satisfied with my old setup. Someone told me the newer motors are faster tho... not sure.
