I just bought the a7IV for my Japan trip in three weeks and im so confused by all the lens numbers. I dont even know where to start but I want just one lens that does everything.

My budget is like $1000? sorry if this is dumb but what should I buy for buildings and people?

Saw your post and since you're heading to Japan, focal length at the wide end matters more than you might think for those narrow streets in Kyoto or the big buildings in Shinjuku. While a superzoom is alright for range, the 28mm starting point is often too tight for architecture. If you can find a used deal or stretch the budget a tiny bit, the Sigma 24-70mm f2.8 DG DN Art is technically a beast for sharpness and chromatic aberration control. That extra 4mm at the wide end gives you an 84-degree angle of view vs only 75 degrees on a 28mm lens. It really counts when you cant back up any further. Another pro option is the Sony FE 24-105mm f4 G OSS. You lose that f/2.8 low light speed, but it has a constant f/4 aperture so your exposure doesnt shift when zooming. It also has built-in Optical Steady Shot which helps the a7IV stabilization. For people, the 105mm focal length gives way better background compression than a 70mm, making portraits look more professional even at f/4. Tbh the 24-105 is probably the most balanced tool for travel because of that 24mm wide end. It basically covers everything from wide landscapes to tight portraits without needing a lens swap.

I have been shooting with the Sony system for over a decade, and over the years, I have learned that for a big international trip, reliability is more important than almost anything else. You dont want to be halfway across the world and have an electronic communication error because of a minor firmware bug. It happens more than you think with some of the cheaper brands. While many people jump to third-party options to save a few dollars, native Sony lenses provide the most consistent autofocus performance and weather sealing. In my experience, the Sony FE 20-70mm f/4 G is currently the best contender for a one-lens travel kit. That 20mm wide end is significantly more useful for architecture and crowded temples than a standard 24mm or 28mm start. It basically gives you two lenses in one without the weight. Market analysis shows that while the Sigma 24-70mm f/2.8 DG DN Art offers a faster aperture, it is much heavier and might exceed your budget when buying brand new. Quick tip: prioritize weight and weather sealing over a fast aperture. You will be walking a lot in Japan, and a heavy lens becomes a burden very quickly. Stick to a high-quality constant f/4 zoom and you will have a much more reliable experience than trying to manage a bulky f/2.8 setup. It is just more practical...

You are gonna have an absolute blast in Japan! For one lens that does it all under $1000, definitely grab the Tamron 28-200mm f/2.8-5.6 Di III RXD. Its amazing because it starts at f/2.8 for low light, but zooms far enough to catch details on temples. Super versatile for buildings and people without constantly swapping glass. Seriously, this lens is basically a cheat code for travel photography!

Late to the party but Japan is seriously the best place ever! I remember my first trip to Kyoto, I was so worried about having the perfect pro setup that I spent way too much money. Honestly, I think I ended up using my phone for half the shots because my gear was just too heavy to lug around... those stairs at the shrines are no joke! Not totally sure but I heard some people say the mid-range zooms are actually better for travel cuz they're so much lighter. IIRC, someone told me the weight difference is like carrying a whole extra bottle of water all day.

  • Your back will thank you for staying light.
  • Save some of that $1000 for a really comfortable strap or some amazing sushi.
  • Dont sweat the tech specs too much, that camera is an absolute beast anyway! Youre gonna love it there, the vibes are just incredible!
