Looking to expand my portrait lens collection for Sony and would love to hear what everyone's been using. Currently shooting with an 85mm f/1.8 but wanting to try different focal lengths and maybe upgrade to something with even better bokeh and sharpness. Considering both native Sony glass and third-party options from Sigma, Tamron, etc. Budget is flexible - willing to invest in quality glass that'll last. What portrait lenses have given you the best results for headshots, full body work, and environmental portraits? Any focal lengths you find particularly versatile? Thanks for sharing your experiences!
Depends on your style:
I actually use the 70-200 GM II most for portraits now. The flexibility is unbeatable.
Can't go wrong with the Sony FE 85mm f/1.4 GM II. Yes, it's pricey, but the bokeh is absolutely creamy and the sharpness is insane even wide open. I've been using it for 2 years now for client work and it's paid for itself many times over. The eye-AF locks on instantly too. If budget is tight, the 85mm f/1.8 is also fantastic - about 80% of the performance for 25% of the price.
In my experience, you dont always need to drop three grand to get pro results. I spent years thinking I had to stick with native Sony glass for the reliability, but I've found that third-party stuff is just as sturdy these days if you pick the right ones. I've been shooting with the Sigma 85mm f/1.4 DG DN Art for ages and it's a beast. Built like a tank and the rendering is just beautiful. If you're looking for real versatility on a budget, look at the Tamron 35-150mm f/2-2.8 Di III VXD. It's basically a bag full of primes in one heavy lens. Over the years I've realized that the small gains in AF speed on the newest GMs rarely justify the price jump for portrait work. I usually buy used from reputable shops anyway... saves me a fortune and the gear still lasts forever if you treat it right. Honestly, dont get caught up in the hype. That 85mm you have is already solid, but the Sigma is the logical step up if you want that extra pop without the GM tax.
For something different, try the Sony 135mm f/1.8 GM! It's my secret weapon for portraits. The compression is beautiful and you get amazing subject separation. Plus it gives you more working distance which helps shy subjects relax. Only downside is you need more space to work, so not great for small studios.
FE 90mm f/2.8 Macro G OSS - Underrated Gem
Don't overlook this one! Sharp as a tack, great working distance, and the macro capability is a bonus. While f/2.8 isn't as fast as the others, the image quality is exceptional and it's much more affordable.
