Looking for external microphone suggestions for my Sony a7R IV. I'm doing more video work and the built-in audio just isn't cutting it anymore. Need something that delivers clean sound for interviews, talking head videos, and some outdoor shooting. Considering both shotgun mics that mount on the hot shoe and wireless lav systems. Budget is flexible up to around $500. What mics have you had success with on the a7R IV? Any mounting or audio level issues I should be aware of? Thanks for the advice!
For weddings I use the Sennheiser MKE 600. Bit longer than others but the reach is fantastic for ceremonies. Has great wind protection too. Only downside is it's quite large on the a7R IV's compact body. For interviews I switch to wireless - Rode Wireless GO II is brilliant.
Rode VideoMic Pro+ is my go-to. Built like a tank, great sound quality, and the battery lasts forever. The auto-power feature works perfectly with the a7R IV too. If that's too pricey, the regular VideoMic Pro is solid. Just remember the a7R IV preamps aren't amazing, so get something with good gain.
Just got my a7R IV last month and was struggling with audio too! Ended up going with the Rode VideoMic Pro Plus - fits perfectly on the hot shoe and the sound quality is night and day compared to the built-in mic. The rechargeable battery lasts forever and having those physical controls right on top is super convenient. Bit pricey but worth it if you're doing any serious video work.
Deity V-Mic D4 Mini! Better value than Rode IMO. Super directional, great off-axis rejection, and the shock mount is excellent. I've been using it on my a7R IV for 6 months - huge improvement over the internal mic. Plus it has a safety track feature which has saved me more than once.
