Just got the Sony a7CR and need to pick up some good SD cards for it. Looking for reliable options that can handle the high-res files and video recording without any issues. I know the a7CR can be pretty demanding with write speeds, especially for burst shooting and 4K video. What SD cards have you been using successfully? Any particular brands or speed classes you'd recommend? Also curious about capacity - thinking 128GB or 256GB cards. Budget isn't a huge concern if the performance is there. Thanks for any suggestions!
The Sony a7CR is a demanding camera, and for high-resolution files, 4K video, and burst shooting, you'll definitely want to invest in UHS-II SD cards. The camera has a single SD card slot that supports UHS-II cards up to the V90 speed class. For optimal performance, especially with 4K video recording (which can go up to 600 Mbps) and uncompressed or lossless compressed RAW files, V90 cards are highly recommended. While V60 cards can work for many video modes and compressed RAW, V90 cards ensure you can utilize all the camera's capabilities without hitting buffer limits as quickly. Popular and reliable brands that are often recommended for Sony cameras include SanDisk Extreme Pro, Lexar Professional, Kingston Canvas React Plus, Delkin Devices, and Sony's own SF-G Tough series. Regarding capacity, 128GB or 256GB cards are good choices. While 128GB will work, the high-resolution files from the a7CR can fill up cards quickly, so 256GB offers more breathing room, especially for extended video shoots or high-volume burst photography.
I strongly recommend UHS-II V90 cards as they're the best SD cards for this camera and allow you to shoot at maximum bitrate of the older H.264 codec (600Mbps) while supporting all S&Q slow-motion settings.
Just saw this thread and wanted to add a quick warning. Honestly, while everyone is talking about speed, I think your gonna want to focus way more on the reliability side of things. Since the a7CR only has one card slot, if that card fails, your basically out of luck for the whole shoot. I'm always a bit paranoid about it tbh. A few things I've noticed that can cause issues or even data loss:
