Hey everyone! I finally pulled the trigger and picked up a Sony a7IV, and I'm absolutely loving it so far. However, coming from an older system, I’m realizing I need to gear up to really make the most of this body. I’m specifically looking for advice on the best SD cards for those 4K 60p files—should I go V60 or splurge on V90? Also, does the battery life hold up for a full day of shooting, or should I grab a couple of spares right away? I’m also debating between a simple Peak Design strap or a full SmallRig cage for video work. What were the first few things you bought that you now can't live without?
I've seen V60 cards fail or throttle during long 4K 60p takes, so I strictly use the Sony 128GB SF-G Tough Series UHS-II SDXC Memory Card for reliability. Also, stick to OEM Sony NP-FZ100 Rechargeable Lithium-Ion Battery (2280mAh) spares over cheap knockoffs; they're way safer for the internal power management iirc. V90 is basically the best choice to avoid corrupted files!!
same here, v60 cards are the sweet spot! definitely grab extra batteries though... that 4k 60p video is literally such a power hog. saved my skin many times!!
basically, the a7IV needs a lot of throughput and power for 4K. it’s kinda frustrating when your setup fails during a big moment... - SD Cards: I tried the cheaper ones but they actually couldnt keep up, so I had to get the fastest ones available.
- Batteries: One is decent, but I carry 2 spares for full days.
- Rigging: I chose a cage cuz it handles the video stuff I use. it works!
> What were the first few things you bought that you now can't live without? For your situation, I’ve been doing some deep dives into the market lately to see what people are actually using. Regarding SD cards, it’s basically a choice between saving some cash and getting raw speed. I’ve compared the Lexar Professional 1667x 128GB SDXC UHS-II (V60) against the ProGrade Digital SDXC UHS-II V90 128GB. The Lexar is super popular for photography, but for those big 4K 60p files, you might want to consider the V90 instead. I’ve read that V60 cards can occasionally drop frames or throttle during long takes, which would be literally heartbreaking!! As for batteries, while the Sony ones are the gold standard, the SmallRig NP-FZ100 Rechargeable Camera Battery with USB-C is a really cool alternative I found during my research. It’s basically got a charging port built right into the battery so you dont need a separate cradle. Just make sure to be careful and maybe keep an eye on the heat, cuz third-party can be hit or miss i guess. Deciding between a strap or cage is tough tho... The Peak Design Slide Camera Strap is amazing for comfort, but if you’re doing video work, the SmallRig Full Cage for Sony Alpha 7 IV 3667 adds so much utility for mounting mics or handles. Personally, I think the cage makes the body feel much more solid in the hand, but it’s heavier for sure. Anyway, honestly hope you enjoy the new camera... it's such a beast! gl!
Actually, I have to disagree slightly with the focus on SD cards. In my experience with the a7IV, if you are really pushing that 4K 60p video, you should skip SD for your primary slot and grab a Sony CEA-G160T 160GB CFexpress Type A Memory Card. Over the years, I have seen V90 cards get surprisingly hot during long takes, which can sometimes lead to the camera shutting down early. CFexpress handles the thermal load way better and your buffer clears basically instantly when shooting stills. On the cage vs strap debate, I would definitely recommend the SmallRig Full Camera Cage for Sony Alpha 7 IV 3667B over just a strap. It adds so much protection and makes the camera body much easier to grip for video work. For power, I have been using the SmallRig NP-FZ100 USB-C Rechargeable Camera Battery lately. It is a total lifesaver because you can just plug a USB-C cable straight into the battery itself, so you do not even need to bring a dedicated charger when you are traveling. TL;DR:
