I’m looking for a solid all-rounder for my A7IV to use for travel and street photography. I want to avoid constant lens swaps, so I'm torn between a superzoom like the Tamron 28-200mm or a classic 24-70mm f/2.8. Which lens do you think offers the best balance of range and image quality?

In my experience, versatility beats fast glass for travel. I'd suggest the Tamron 28-200mm f/2.8-5.6 Di III RXD cuz swapping lenses on the fly is a pain and youll literally miss shots, tbh.

> I’m torn between a superzoom like the Tamron 28-200mm or a classic 24-70mm f/2.8. Respectfully, I'd consider another option. I mean, I totally get the appeal of the "one lens to rule them all" vibe, but I've had a different experience. Last year in London, I brought a superzoom thinking it'd be perfect, but honestly? I really missed having that extra width at 24mm for those tight street scenes, and the low light performance was... well, kinda disappointing once the sun went down. If you're using an Sony Alpha A7IV, you really want glass that can keep up with that sensor. I'd actually suggest the Sigma 24-70mm f/2.8 DG DN Art for Sony E or even the Sony FE 24-105mm f/4 G OSS. The 24-105mm is basically a tank and super reliable, plus constant f/4 is way safer for street stuff than a lens that drops to f/5.6 fast. Lesson learned: reach is cool, but sharpness and the 24mm end are what you'll actually use 90% of the time!!

Coming back to this... sooo basically, over the years I've tried many different setups, but I used to ignore the safety side of things. Swapping lenses in the middle of a busy street or a windy beach? Total nightmare for ur sensor!! I literally learned this the hard way during a trip to the coast when I got sand inside the body and every shot after had these tiny black dots... honestly, it ruined my mood for the whole week. I went through this exact struggle last year. I kept thinking I needed that fast f/2.8 look for street stuff, but carrying a heavy bag and constantly fumbling with caps in a crowd made me feel super vulnerable. Like, I felt like a walking target, you know? It’s not just about the gear itself, but also about not wanting to draw too much attention to yourself when you're in a new city. In my experience, the trade-off in aperture was nothing compared to the security of never opening up my camera in public. My current zoom stays on 99% of the time now. It’s kinda liberating to just walk around with one lens and know I’m ready for anything without risking my gear. Plus, if I really need that blurry background, I’ve found that zooming in all the way usually does the trick anyway. I guess it really comes down to what makes u feel most comfortable while shooting. Anyway, gl with the decision!!

Just sharing my experience: I went through this last year and was SO paranoid about dust getting on my sensor!! I basically did a ton of market research and loved the Tamron 28-200mm f/2.8-5.6 Di III RXD for the safety of NEVER swapping lenses. I mean, the Sigma 24-70mm f/2.8 DG DN Art is fantastic glass, but honestly, for travel, that extra range without the risk is amazing... reallyyy helped my peace of mind!! gl
