I'm planning a big trip to Southeast Asia next month and just picked up the new Canon EOS R5 Mark II. I'm looking for lens recommendations that would be perfect for travel photography - thinking versatility, image quality, and reasonable size/weight since I'll be backpacking. Should I go with a 24-70mm f/2.8 or maybe the 24-105mm f/4? Also considering a prime for portraits. What's your go-to travel setup for the R5 Mark II? Thanks!
Hot take: get the RF 28-70mm f/2L if you can handle the size and cost. I know it's massive, but the image quality is just stunning and that f/2 aperture gives you so much flexibility in changing light conditions. Used it throughout Europe last month and every shot was a keeper. The bokeh for travel portraits is incredible.
I've been using the RF 24-70mm f/2.8L IS for travel with my R5 Mark II and it's been fantastic. Yes, it's a bit heavy, but the image quality and versatility make it worth carrying. The IS is incredible - I can get sharp handheld shots in pretty dim conditions. For a lighter option, the RF 24-105mm f/4L IS is also excellent and gives you that extra reach which is nice for travel. The f/4 aperture isn't a huge limitation unless you're doing a lot of low light work.
tbh I kinda agree that the Canon RF 24-105mm f/4L IS USM is the way to go for this trip. Since youre gonna be in SE Asia, the weather sealing is basically the most important thing. I'm still sorta new to all the specs, but from what I’ve read, the L-series glass is way more reliable when it gets humid or dusty. Here is why I think reliability should be your first priority:
- Weather gaskets: The L lenses have those rubber seals at the mount which protects your Canon EOS R5 Mark II sensor from moisture.
- Construction: They can handle being bumped around in a backpack better than the cheaper lenses because they're built like tanks.
- Consistency: You dont want your gear failing in the middle of a jungle trip. I do wonder though, does the extending barrel on the 24-105mm suck in moisture or dust when it zooms? I’m kinda nervous about that part for a backpacking trip. For your prime, maybe look at a small one, but does it need to be weather sealed too? Safety first right?
