R5 Mark II street lens suggestions? Ideally something sharp. Budget is around $1500. What's a solid all-rounder?
Late to the party here, but honestly, some of these suggestions are a bit disappointing given how much resolving power the R5 II actually has. If you're dropping that kind of cash on a 45MP body, putting older EF glass on it via an adapter is usually a recipe for soft corners and chromatic aberration. You really need something that can handle the high pixel density without falling apart wide open. Quick question before I get too deep into the data: are you looking for a specific focal length like 35mm, or do you need the versatility of a zoom? Street photography is pretty broad and your preference there changes the MTF requirements significantly. Basically, if you want peak performance, you have to look at the line pairs per millimeter the glass can actually resolve. Most older lenses weren't designed for sensors this dense.
It's cool seeing all these different takes, basically sounds like everyone is weighing that sharpness vs. the price of third-party gear. From what I’ve been reading and trying out lately as I get used to my own gear, here’s a few things I’ve noticed for the long-term: * Honestly, just go with the native Canon RF stuff if you can... it’s SO much easier.
* Stick to the "L" series glass because the weather sealing and build quality is really nice to have when you're out in the elements for years.
* Maybe look at the smaller, lighter versions of the pro lenses so your arm doesn't get tired after a full day of street shooting! I'm still pretty new to the R5 Mark II world, but I’ve found that sticking to the main brand just makes the whole experience way smoother. Like, you don't have to worry about firmware updates or weird focus things or anything down the road. Does the native glass usually hold its value better too? That's what I'm hoping anyway...
Been rocking a Sigma 35mm f/1.4 for years! Amazing sharpness, super reliable. I love it!
Tech specs point to Sigma 24-70mm f/2.8. Unfortunately, mine had issues with focus consistency. Tamron 28-75mm G2? Not as good as expected. Consider Sony GM lenses.
Before chasing sharpness, consider a stabilized lens. Impacts happen! Tamron 24-70mm f/2.8 VC USD G2 is decent. Shop used, save money for proper insurance. Street photography can get hairy!
Skip new. Tamron 24-70mm f/2.8 G2 used. Sharp, versatile, often under $800.
Hey! Street lenses, huh? Instead of specific models, consider brand philosophy. Sigma often nails sharpness for the price. I see them consistently rank high in comparison tests versus Canon's similar offerings.
