I recently picked up a Fuji X-T5 and want to start shooting local sports (mostly soccer and basketball). I’m a bit stuck on which lens makes the most sense for fast action on this body. I’d like something with quick autofocus and enough reach for outdoor fields, but also usable indoors under gym lighting. Budget is roughly $800–$1,200 and I’m fine with used gear. I’ve looked at options like the XF 50-140mm f/2.8 and the XF 70-300mm, but I’m worried about speed vs reach and how well they track on the X-T5. What sports lens would you recommend and why?

Honestly, after shooting local sports with this system for a few years, the biggest thing I learned wasn't just about the glass but how much the weight matters during a long soccer tournament. I started out with a heavy pro-grade zoom because I thought I needed that constant aperture for everything, and while the shots were crisp, my arm was absolutely dead by the third game. You really start to value portability after a while, you know? On the X-T5 specifically, I spent ages messing with the AF-C custom settings to get things dialed in. I found that the "Ignore Obstacles" setting was a total game-changer for basketball when players are constantly crossing in front of your subject. I used to think my glass was hunting, but it was actually just my settings being too twitchy. Nowadays, I tend to grab my lighter telephoto for outdoor daytime games and only haul out the big, fast glass when I know the gym lighting is going to be garbage. It's basically a balance between being comfortable and getting the shot. Sometimes the best gear is the stuff that doesn't make you want to go home after an hour!!!

Hey! For your situation, I’d suggest Fujifilm XF 50-140mm f/2.8 R LM OIS WR first. Background: indoor gyms are brutal on shutter speed/ISO, so f/2.8 matters. Why it matters: you’ll get cleaner files and more keeper shots than with slower zooms. Solution: use the 50-140 for basketball + closer soccer; add a used tele later if you need. IMO the Fujifilm XF 70-300mm f/4-5.6 R LM OIS WR is great outdoors, but indoors it’s just too slow. Hope this helps!

Story time: I went through this last year with an X-T5 shooting my nephew’s soccer + a bunch of HS basketball. I rented Fujifilm XF 50-140mm f/2.8 R LM OIS WR first (used around $850–$1,050) and honestly… it was amazing indoors. f/2.8 + OIS kept my shutter speeds reasonable without ISO going totally nuts, and AF felt “snappy enough” for drives to the basket.

Outside though, 140mm on APS-C sometimes felt short from the sideline. I tried Fujifilm XF 70-300mm f/4-5.6 R LM OIS WR (used ~$650–$800) and loved the reach, but under gym lights it got rough fast—f/5.6 meant I was living at high ISO and the keeper rate dropped.

Budget hack: I found a clean used 50-140 and just… didn’t baby it, but I did check for decentering/OIS noise before committing. Hope this helps!

Regarding the earlier comment - +1 on the Fujifilm XF 50-140mm f/2.8 R LM OIS WR as the “safe” pick. Indoor basketball is where people get hurt (financially lol): if you buy the slower Fujifilm XF 70-300mm f/4-5.6 R LM OIS WR thinking it’ll do everything, you’ll end up at ISO 12800+ and 1/250s and wonder why shots are blurry.

Safety/reliability angle: the 50-140’s AF motors are fast and consistent, and f/2.8 lets you keep shutter speeds high without nuking your files. Also WR + OIS is nice peace-of-mind on dusty sidelines and bad weather.

For soccer reach, I’d treat the 70-300 as an outdoor-only add-on (used ~$650–$800). If you’re buying just one lens in your budget, I’d go 50-140 used (~$850–$1,050) and call it done.

Hope this helps!

To add to the point about "Hey! For your situation, I’d suggest Fujifilm XF 50-140mm f/2.8...": IMO go used Fujifilm XF 50-140mm f/2.8 R LM OIS WR for basketball + closer soccer; rent/borrow Fujifilm XF 70-300mm f/4-5.6 R LM OIS WR for big fields—f/2.8 speed matters indoors.

@User above mentioned "Hey! For your situation, I’d suggest Fujifilm XF 50-140mm f/2.8..." - +1, that’s the most “market-correct” pick for your mixed soccer/basketball use. Used Fujifilm XF 50-140mm f/2.8 R LM OIS WR tends to hold value and is basically Fuji’s 70-200/2.8 equivalent; compared to something like a Canon/Sony 70-200/2.8, pricing is similar used, but you’re buying into Fuji’s smaller used pool so grabbing a clean copy matters. I’d only add: if soccer is priority and you can live with higher ISO indoors, Fujifilm XF 70-300mm f/4-5.6 R LM OIS WR is the better reach-per-dollar.
