Top budget-friendly Sigma lenses for the L-mount system?

I’ve recently made the jump over to the L-mount system with a used Panasonic Lumix S5, and while I’m absolutely loving the image quality and ergonomics, my bank account is definitely feeling the sting of full-frame glass prices! I’m looking to build out a solid kit, but the native Leica and even some of the Panasonic S Pro lenses are way out of my reach for the time being.

I know Sigma is basically the hero of the L-Mount Alliance when it comes to variety, but they have so many different lines now that I'm getting a bit overwhelmed. I’ve been eyeing the 'I Series' primes because they look incredibly compact and well-built, specifically the 35mm or 65mm, but I’m wondering if they hold up against the bigger Art series lenses in terms of character. I’m also curious if there’s a 'hidden gem' zoom that can handle travel and general use without being a total brick to carry around.

I’m trying to keep my next couple of purchases under $600-$700 each if possible. For those of you who have been shooting L-mount for a while, which Sigma lenses do you think offer the absolute best 'bang for your buck' in terms of sharpness and reliable autofocus? Any specific recommendations for a versatile budget starter kit?

Seconding the recommendation above! The 28-70 is basically a beast for the price, but since youre worried about reliability, just keep in mind that the Contemporary line isnt fully weather-sealed like the Art glass. I mean, itll survive a light mist, but be careful in a downpour!! If you want to round out that kit, I would suggest looking at:
* Sigma 24mm F2 DG DN Contemporary for L-Mount - Really solid for wide shots and travel.
* Sigma 90mm F2.8 DG DN Contemporary for L-Mount - This is the real hidden gem imo. Super sharp for portraits but tiny. Also, make sure to pick up the Sigma USB Dock UD-11 for L-Mount. Ive learned the hard way that keeping the lens firmware current is the only way to ensure the AF stays snappy on Panasonic bodies... hope that helps! 👍

Curious about one thing: what do you actually shoot most? Street? Portraits? Anyway, for a 'hidden gem' zoom, the Sigma 28-70mm F2.8 DG DN Contemporary for L-Mount is basically perfect for the S5... its way lighter than the Art series and fits ur budget. Sharpness is solid, though corners are slightly softer than the Art glass. the I-series like the Sigma 65mm F2 DG DN Contemporary for L-Mount have amazing character tho. lmk! cheers

Adding my two cents since I went through this last year! The I-series is actually perfect for the S5. 1. Sigma 35mm F2 DG DN Contemporary for L-Mount: Insane build, feels high-end but way cheaper than Leica glass. 2. Sigma 45mm F2.8 DG DN Contemporary for L-Mount: Not the fastest, but its tiny and super sharp for travel. Honestly, i'm sooo happy with how they balance. gl!
