Hey everyone! I recently picked up a Lumix S5 and I'm absolutely loving the camera, but I'm finding that most of the pro-grade L-mount glass is way out of my price range right now. I’m really looking to get into portrait photography and need something that can deliver that nice creamy bokeh without breaking the bank. I’ve been eyeing the Panasonic 85mm f1.8 and some of the Sigma Contemporary primes, but I'm not sure which offers the best bang for the buck. I'm trying to keep the budget under $600 if possible. Are there any hidden gems or sharp third-party options I should consider? What would you recommend as the best value-for-money portrait lens currently available?
For your situation: - Panasonic LUMIX S 85mm f/1.8 (S-S85): Best bokeh, fast f/1.8.
- Sigma 90mm f/2.8 DG DN Contemporary for L-Mount: Sharper, but be careful... f/2.8 isnt as creamy tho.
In my experience, these are ur best bets:
- Stick with the Panasonic LUMIX S 85mm f/1.8 (S-S85) for that creamy bokeh; it’s basically the king of value.
- Maybe check the Sigma 90mm f/2.8 DG DN Contemporary for L-Mount if you want something tiny, tho is f/2.8 fast enough for you? Good luck!
Story time: I went through this last year. comparing native glass vs third-party vs manual: native is safest, third-party is cheaper, and manual is tough tho. honestly, be careful... i found third-party AF can be reallyyy sketchy on the S5 and i didnt want to miss focus. for me, native Panasonic glass was the best choice for reliability. anyway, make sure to check firmware first, right? maybe check if you're comfortable with manual?
In my experience, the Panasonic LUMIX S 85mm f/1.8 (S-S85) is basically the king of value. I've used it on my S5 for years and that 9-blade diaphragm gives such smooth bokeh... honestly better than some pro glass. The Sigma 90mm f/2.8 DG DN Contemporary for L-Mount is sharper but maybe too slow at f/2.8 for ur creamy bokeh? TL;DR: Get the Panny 85mm. Its linear motor is fast and it stays under budget.
