Im honestly so fed up with my current 24-105 zoom lens. Its just way too heavy and the weight distribution on my S5II makes my wrist ache after like twenty minutes of shooting and the focus hunting in low light is just driving me insane. Im moving to Portland next month for a new job and I really wanted to get into some serious street photography but I feel like I have this giant bazooka attached to my camera that makes everyone stare at me. I've spent way too much money on gear that just stays in my bag because I hate carrying it out and I'm honestly getting anxious that I wont have a setup I actually like before I leave.
I have about 1500 dollars left in my gear budget to fix this and I really need to move toward a more compact prime setup. I keep looking at the Sigma I-series vs the Panasonic 1.8 primes but then I see the Leica prices and get even more stressed out. I just need something sharp that balances well and wont miss focus when I'm walking around the city. What are the best prime lenses for the L-mount system that actually feel good to use daily?
I've tried many setups over the years, usually obsessing over MTF curves and AF motor response times. To stay agile in Portland, look at these:
Just saw this. Do you shoot in the rain much? Portland is soggy so weather sealing is huge imo.
> Im honestly so fed up with my current 24-105 zoom lens. Its just way too heavy and the weight distribution on my S5II makes my wrist ache after like twenty minutes of shooting I hear you. I spent years lugging around heavy zooms and it honestly just kills the creativity when your hand is cramping up. I had a similar experience with that lens when i was shooting in Seattle... by the end of the day, i just wanted to throw the whole kit in the river. Unfortunately, i also had issues with the Sigma 35mm f/2 DG DN Contemporary I-Series for street work. While the build quality is nice, the focus hunting on fast-moving subjects was not as good as expected, especially when the light started to drop. Since youre moving to Portland, you definitely want something weather-sealed and light. For your $1500 budget, i'd personally grab the Panasonic Lumix S 35mm f/1.8 and the Panasonic Lumix S 85mm f/1.8. I switched to this combo a few months ago and the difference in balance on the S5II is huge. They're basically identical in size so you dont even have to look at your hands to swap them. It’s kinda disappointing that they dont feel as premium as the Leica glass, but for actual daily shooting without the wrist pain, they're the only things that havent let me down. You'll have plenty of cash left over for a good strap or some extra batteries too.
Just catching up here. In my experience, you really need to watch the center of gravity on the S5II. Even lightweight primes can feel awkward if the internal elements are clustered near the front. I usually check technical teardowns on LensRentals for weight distribution info. For Portland, weather-sealed gaskets are non-negotiable. Honestly, skip older adapted glass... the pulse-to-scan AF behavior on L-mount is often way too jittery for fast street shots.
Wait really?? Thats actually super helpful. I always thought it was the other way around.
