Which leather straps look vintage but wont break on a Leica M6?

Sorry if this is a dumb question but I just got the camera and Im super anxious about dropping it because I dont understand how the rings work. I have maybe $100 and need it before a trip next week...

Dude I am in the exact same boat right now!! This M6 lug situation has me honestly losing sleep. It is so stressful! The whole morning was spent researching the shear strength of different ring alloys because a catastrophic failure during my commute is my biggest fear. You are totally not alone in this... every time the camera moves I am just waiting for the sound of it hitting the pavement. Cheap stuff that claims to be vintage but uses sub-par split rings is a huge red flag. If the ring isnt high-grade stainless or tempered steel it can actually deform under the constant weight and motion of the camera body! Some leather straps are actually just bonded scraps with a plastic core... those have zero structural integrity when they get wet or sweaty. It is honestly a nightmare trying to find something that actually has the proper PSI rating for the leather hide tho. Metal rivets that arent properly peened or backed are another thing to avoid. If they pull through the leather because of poor grain density it is basically game over for your M6! Still hunting for something that isnt just a fashion accessory because the technical specs on most of these straps are basically nonexistent and it scares the hell out of me!

Ngl I was so paranoid when I first got my M6 too. I once used a thin strap and the ring actually started sawing into the metal lug... totally terrified me. To stay safe I always check for:

  • Leather ear flaps to stop scratching
  • Heavy duty split rings that dont bend
  • Thicker leather that wont stretch Just be careful with those rings. If they arent seated right, your baby is hitting the pavement.
