So I finally upgraded to the Q3 after years with the Q2 and honestly the camera is amazing but the strap situation is driving me insane right now. I thought I could just swap over my old Artisan and Artist silk cord but for some reason the way the lugs sit on this body makes it hang totally crooked when I have it over my shoulder and it keeps digging into my neck. Ive been shooting street for over a decade and Ive never had this much trouble finding a fit that actually feels secure but doesnt look like a bulky mess.
I tried those peak design anchors but they look so cheap on a five thousand dollar camera and the plastic bits keep clinking against the magnesium body which is making me paranoid about scratches already. Im heading to Tokyo in three weeks for a two-week intensive project and I desperately need something high quality leather that can handle being on my neck for 10 hours a day. Budget is around 200 bucks but Im willing to go higher if the leather is actually top tier like some proper Horween or shell cordovan stuff. Does anyone have a specific brand they swear by for the Q3 that actually stays flat and doesnt twist around every five minutes? I need something that wont fail me in the humidity...
I'd actually disagree about using shell cordovan for a Tokyo trip. Tbh, it spots and welts the second it hits high humidity, which is basically a guarantee there. If you're doing 10-hour days, you need something with higher tensile strength that won't stretch or bleed onto your shirt. The balance issue usually comes down to the strap thickness at the lug connection point.
Re: "I'd actually disagree about using shell cordovan for..." - yeah, cordovan is a nightmare in the rain. Unfortunately, I've had issues with most luxury straps being way too slippery or thin for actual street work. You need something robust for those 10-hour days. The Rock n Roll Straps Classic M-Series Leather stays flat and wont fail you like those flimsy cords.
I found that using a strap with wider leather ends corrected that balance issue. My current setup stays flat against the body, which significantly reduced neck strain during my last long trip.
Just saw this. Quick question tho, are you using the stock hood or a third-party one? The center of gravity on the Q3 is a bit funky compared to the old one so it affects the hang. Honestly, just look at Vi Vante. Their leather handles Tokyo humidity way better than silk. Their attachment point geometry provides much better stability for a 700g body... kinda keeps it from twisting.
