So I finally upgraded to the Q3 after shooting with my Q2 forever and man, the ergonomics are just slightly off for me now. I think its the new tilt screen mechanism or maybe just the button layout change but my grip feels way less secure when I am doing one-handed street shots. Im heading to Tokyo in three weeks for a big trip and really need to get this sorted before I leave. Ive looked at the official Leica one which is pricey as hell and then some third party ones like Match Technical or Haoge. The official one looks clean but I heard it might block the dial? Which thumb grip are you guys actually using on the Q3 that feels the most solid without getting in the way?
Just found this thread today. Honestly, skip the Leica official one. In my experience, youre just paying for the logo. Ive tried many grips over the years and the Match Technical Thumbs Up EP-SQ3 is definitely the gold standard for build quality, but the price is eye-watering. For a big trip like Tokyo where youll be shooting constantly, I actually suggest the Haoge HG-Q3B Thumb Grip for Leica Q3. Its a fraction of the cost but the fitment is surprisingly tight. It gives you that extra leverage for one-handed shots without digging into your palm or blocking the rear dial. Its basically a no-brainer if you want function over fashion. Id rather spend that extra $100 on batteries or some good ramen while youre out there...
Jumping in here! Like someone mentioned, the official one is just a mess for that dial. I ended up with the Haoge THB-Q3B Metal Thumb Up Rest for Leica Q3 and honestly its amazing for under 50 bucks. Love it because:
ngl the Q3 is a bit of a beast compared to the older ones. that tilt screen definitely changes how you gotta hold it. i went through a couple of different setups before finding what worked for me. honestly the official one is way overpriced and i actually found it a bit cramped near the dial tbh. heres what i noticed when testing a few:
Regarding what #1 said about "ngl the Q3 is a bit of a beast", honestly im super bummed with the official grip i tried. unfortunately the clearance for the rear dial is basically non-existent and it makes adjusting settings a total nightmare when youre out shooting. its not as good as expected for that price. just a heads up, avoid anything that sits too flush or youll struggle to move that dial quickly... kinda ruins the flow tbh.
