Which thumb grip is most comfortable for the Leica Q3?

I've been shooting Leica for a decade and never needed accessories but this Q3 is killing my hand. I was doing street stuff in NYC yesterday and after four hours my thumb was cramping bad. I keep hitting the rear dial by accident too. My logic was to just buy the official Leica one but $250 for a bit of metal is insane and I heard it blocks the top dial? Then I looked at the Match Technical one but it looks bulky in the product shots. I need a solid leverage point that doesn't mess with the ergonomics or my EVF access. Anyone actually tried both? I'm heading to Tokyo next week and need to sort this out fast...

Used a bunch of these over the years, but the Haoge THB-QB Metal Thumb Rest stayed solid during my last shoot.

  • Perfect fit
  • No shoe damage Its honestly reliable.

Dude, you definitely need to fix that ergonomics issue before Tokyo because youll be shooting non stop! I have spent way too much time testing the torque and leverage points on these things. Honestly, the Match Technical Thumbs Up EP-SQ3 Brass Black is an absolute masterpiece of engineering! It is carved from solid brass with a density that provides incredible vibration dampening. The way it positions your thumb exactly over the sensor axis makes the camera feel so much more balanced. It is amazing! People say it looks bulky but in hand its a totally different story. The ergonomics are spot on and it provides a massive amount of leverage for one-handed street shots. I personally found that the Leica Thumb Support Q3 19530 Aluminum Black feels a bit flimsy by comparison since its just light alloy. The Match Technical weighs about 65 grams compared to the Leicas 22 grams, and that extra mass really helps counter the lens weight. The Leica one doesnt really block the dial like people claim, but the Thumbs Up has a much better integrated silicone bumper system to protect the body finish. If you want the most stable grip for long days in Shinjuku, go with the Match Technical. The build quality is just stunning and the hot shoe fit is perfectly machined to tiny tolerances! Let me know if you want the exact dimensions because I have the calipers out right now. Youre gonna love the difference it makes for your street work!

I was in the same boat with the hand cramps and finally just bit the bullet on a simple third-party grip. Honestly, I am pretty satisfied with how it works. It solved the accidental dial bumps immediately which was my biggest gripe. Just a word of caution though... watch out for the fit in the hot shoe. Ive heard horror stories about some generic grips being slightly too thick and actually stretching the metal rails or scratching the paint. I went with one that has a tiny rubber stopper on the back to keep it from wiggling. It feels very reliable and I dont have to worry about it snapping off if I snag it on my sleeve. For a trip to Tokyo, you definitely want something that feels like part of the camera. Just stay away from the ultra-cheap ones that feel like plastic, those arent worth the risk to the body.
