Hey everyone! I just recently made the switch to the Nikon Z6 and I am absolutely loving the image quality so far. However, moving from a DSLR to mirrorless feels like a whole new world, and I want to make sure I have all the right gear to support it. I already have the FTZ adapter for my older glass, but I am curious about what else is essential. Should I prioritize more XQD cards or look into a cage for video work? Also, I have heard the battery life can be a bit shorter than my old D750, so maybe some spare batteries are a must? What are the absolute essential accessories you would recommend for a new Z6 owner to get the best experience?
oh man, I totally feel u on that transition. I remember when I first swapped my D750 for the Z6... I was so paranoid about that single card slot failing or the battery dying mid-shoot. In my experience, the absolute first thing u gotta grab is a screen protector. I use the ULBTER Tempered Glass Screen Protector for Nikon Z6 which is only like ten bucks. Seriously, it's a small price to pay to keep that rear LCD safe from scratches. For batteries, yeah, the Z6 is way thirstier than the D750. I usually recommend the Wasabi Power Battery 2-Pack for Nikon EN-EL15b cuz they're around $30 and honestly work great, though u should always check compatibility with the latest firmware. I'd avoid super cheap unbranded ones though, cuz they can swell and ruin ur camera. Also, XQD cards are literal wallet-killers. I suggest the Sony G Series 120GB XQD Memory Card for about $180. Idk, I just think it's safer to have one reliable card than several small ones. Basically, keep it simple and dont overspend early on. cheers!
yo! basically just saw this thread and i totally get the anxiety coming from the d750. the z6 is a beast but yeah it eats power way faster than an old dslr. since youre worried about reliability, i definitely recommend staying with official gear where it counts... i have been so happy with my setup lately. here is what i suggest comparing:
Bookmarked, thanks!
Like someone mentioned, the battery life is the biggest culture shock coming from a DSLR! I totally agree that spares are a must-have. One thing I really want to caution you about though is the card reader you pick up for those XQD cards. It is so tempting to grab a cheap generic one, but those things are notorious for poor heat dissipation. I have seen data get corrupted mid-transfer because the reader basically cooked the card! It is way more common than people think. Also, be super careful with third-party USB-C cables if you plan on charging in-camera. The Z6 is pretty picky about the Power Delivery spec, and using a flimsy cable can actually lead to some nasty voltage spikes. I am absolutely loving my Z6, but the electronics are definitely more sensitive than the D750 was. Stick to high-quality data gear and you will be golden!
Works great for me
