Which external flash works best with Nikon DSLR cameras?

I’m looking for a solid external flash for my Nikon D750. The built-in flash is just too harsh for portraits! I’ve been eyeing the Nikon SB-700, but I’m hearing great things about Godox's value. I need reliable TTL and fast recycle times for indoor events. What’s your go-to flash that balances performance and budget for Nikon?

Basically, TTL calculates exposure through the lens so you dont blow out pics. It works great:

Godox V860III-N TTL Flash for Nikon - fast recycle.
Nikon SB-700 Speedlight - decent option.

Honestly, been digging into the technical side of speedlights lately and there's a few things people usually overlook when shopping for events. It's not just about the guide number, it's about how the electronics handle sustained firing.

  • Beware of units that don't have active thermal protection. Low-end electronics will literally let the flash tube crack or melt if you're popping off shots too fast during a ceremony.
  • Avoid anything that relies solely on optical slaving. If someone else at the event has a flash, yours might trigger early, or it wont fire at all if you don't have direct line-of-sight.
  • Stay away from plastic hot shoe feet. Event photography is physical, and one accidental bump against a doorway will snap a plastic foot right off your camera.
  • Watch the recycle curve. Some specs claim 1.5 seconds but that's only for the first few shots. After that, the capacitors struggle and it can jump to 5 seconds which is a nightmare for fast-paced work. Really comes down to the voltage regulation inside the unit. If you've got questions about specific refresh rates or trigger frequencies, let me know. I can pull some data for you.
