Ive been a Nikon guy forever but man my D850 is a total brick for travel. Im heading to Kyoto in three weeks and I seriously need something lighter under a grand. Ive looked at the Sony a6400 but worried about the lack of IBIS since Ill be doing a lot of handheld street shots at night. Maybe a used Fuji? I really want something compact that doesnt scream tourist but still has a decent EVF for those bright sunny days. Does anyone have a favorite compact mirrorless setup for under $1000 including a kit lens or maybe a small prime? Im torn between staying with what I know or jumping ship to a new system just for this trip...
TL;DR: Grab a used Fujifilm X-S10 Mirrorless Camera with the Fujifilm XF 18-55mm f/2.8-4 R LM OIS Lens. In my experience, you cant beat this for travel under $1000. Ive tried many rigs and the X-S10 has the IBIS you need for Kyoto nights without being a tank like that D850. Used is the way to go to keep it cheap. Its stealthy and the lens is actually quality glass.
Olympus OM-D E-M10 Mark IV with 14-42mm EZ Lens has 4.5 stops of IBIS. Its very compact, fits your budget, and 20MP is plenty. MFT lenses are dirt cheap too.

If you want real IBIS reliability and weather sealing for under a grand, honestly look at a used Panasonic Lumix G9. The 5-axis dual stabilization system is rated for like 6.5 stops and it actually hits those numbers in real world use. Its a tank compared to the Sony stuff but way lighter than your D850. Speaking of Kyoto tho, last time I was there I got totally distracted by the vending machines. Have you seen the ones that sell hot canned coffee? I spent an entire afternoon researching the thermal efficiency of those cans because I couldnt understand how they stayed hot for so long without melting the plastic housing. This deep dive led me to a forum dedicated just to Japanese vending machine logistics and spent way too much time reading about their compressor specs. anyway sorry lol kinda went off topic there
