I recently picked up a Sony a6400 and I'm loving the autofocus, but the 16-50mm kit lens feels a bit limiting, especially when shooting in low light. I’m looking for a solid 'all-rounder' lens that I can keep on my camera for daily walks, travel, and casual street photography. I’ve been looking at the Sigma 18-50mm f/2.8 because it's so compact, but I’m also considering a sharp prime like the Sony 35mm f/1.8 for the added stabilization. My budget is around $500-$600 and I really value portability. Does anyone have experience with these on the a6400, or is there another 'must-have' lens I should consider for a versatile everyday setup?
Honestly, i was kinda disappointed when i realized the Sigma 18-50mm f/2.8 DC DN Contemporary Lens for Sony E lacks stabilization. Since the a6400 has no IBIS, it's tough! The Sony E 35mm f/1.8 OSS Lens is way better for low light cuz of that built-in OSS. But for a real all-rounder, the Tamron 17-70mm f/2.8 Di III-A VC RXD for Sony E is the market king if you dont mind the size... basically fixes the shakiness issue! gl!
Same setup here, love it
Watch out for the lack of internal stabilization in that camera body!! It's a huge trap cuz if you pick a lens that doesn't have it built-in, like that compact Sigma zoom you're looking at, your low-light shots can get reallyyy shaky. Since the a6400 doesn't have ibis, you basically gotta keep your shutter speeds high or have a very steady hand... But for your situation, I would suggest just going with that f/2.8 zoom. Honestly, I've been shooting with these Sony cameras for a decade and that lens is a total game changer for travel. It's so tiny it basically feels like a prime! I used to lug around three different lenses but now I just keep that one on 24/7. Tbh, the constant aperture is sooo much better than the kit lens for street stuff. It's easily the best all-rounder for the price. Seriously, you'll love it! gl!
