Hey everyone! I’m currently planning a landscape photography trip and I’m struggling to find the perfect travel tripod for my Sony A7III. Since these mirrorless bodies are so compact, I really want something lightweight for long hikes, but it needs to be sturdy enough to handle my 24-70mm GM lens without any head creep. I’ve been looking at the Peak Design Carbon Fiber and some Benro models, but I'm worried about vibration during long exposures. I definitely need something with an Arca-Swiss compatible plate that fits easily into a standard carry-on. Does anyone have a favorite setup that perfectly balances portability and stability for the Sony Alpha system?
Late to the party but I’ve been looking into this for my own A7III setup lately. Honestly, the 24-70mm GM is a heavy lens for travel legs, so you gotta focus on leg diameter and the locking mechanism of the ball head... otherwise head creep is basically inevitable. I would suggest comparing the Gitzo GT1545T Series 1 Traveler Carbon Fiber Tripod and the Leofoto LS-284C Ranger Series Carbon Fiber Tripod with LH-30 Ball Head. The Gitzo is basically the premium choice; its Carbon eXact tubing is literally designed to dampen those tiny vibrations you're worried about during long exposures. But, it's SO pricey. On the other hand, the Leofoto is awesome because it lacks a center column. This makes it way more stable because the legs attach directly to the apex, which highkey reduces the leverage that causes shake. It’s also super thin for packing in a carry-on. Tbh, going without a center column is probably the way to go for max stability on windy hikes. Anyway, hope that helps! gl!
So I just saw this thread and honestly... after 15 years of landscape shooting, I’ve learned that "travel" usually means "compromise." Since ur using that heavy 24-70mm GM, you might want to consider the Vanguard VEO 3GO 235CB Carbon Fiber Travel Tripod with T-50 Ball Head. It’s way more budget-friendly than the Peak Design mentioned earlier but still feels super STIFF. Here’s a couple of tips for ur setup:
* Keep the center column down; raising it literally kills ur stability during long exposures.
* Hang ur camera bag from the weight hook to anchor everything when it's windy... it actually helps a ton. I would also suggest checking out the Sirui T-1205 Carbon Fiber Travel Tripod with K-10X Ball Head. It’s a bit of a hidden gem for the price. Just be careful with cheap ball heads cuz they tend to creep over time! Good luck!
This^ Also wanted to add that stability is basically all about dampening. With a heavy lens, u gotta worry about torsional rigidity so ur legs dont twist... which literally ruins the shot and risks your gear falling! * Stick with Gitzo for the best tech! * Carbon legs are non-negotiable for safety!! Honestly, just get any Gitzo, they're amazing and u wont have to worry about head creep ever again. peace
Oh man, I totally feel u! Basically, travel tripods gotta be light but sturdy cuz wind is literally the worst for long exposures. Carbon fiber is actually the way to go since it handles vibrations sooo much better than metal. * Go with Peak Design, they’re amazing!!
* Honestly, any carbon fiber Benro works too. Just get any carbon fiber one from those brands and youre set! gl!
Watch out for the "travel" label! Seconding the recommendation above, but it’s a trap. Brands like Manfrotto or Sirui are light, but their heads often suffer from creep with heavy GM lenses. Honestly, I've had issues where they just didn't hold up. Compared to beefier Leofoto setups - which offer much better stability - the ultralight ones are basically gonna fail u in the wind. Just be reallyyy cautious with ur gear! 👍
