I recently picked up an L-mount camera and want to adapt some old M42 and Canon FD glass. I’m seeing huge price gaps between basic $20 options and premium Novoflex adapters. Are the expensive ones worth it for better build quality and avoiding light leaks? Which specific brands do you recommend for a solid, wiggle-free fit?
Adding my two cents cuz I've been through a bunch of these. Honestly, I've had some really annoying issues with the dirt-cheap $15-20 ones—literally had one that wouldn't lock the FD pin correctly, and it was basically useless. If you want a solid, wiggle-free fit without spending Novoflex L-Mount Adapter money, I'd say aim for the middle ground. Check out the K&F Concept Pro Series L-mount Adapter—they're way better than the basic ones and dont leak light. Also, you might find this useful: look up the "Phillip Reeve" website. They've got a killer guide on adapting manual glass that's saved me a ton of cash. For M42, I'd go with the Haoge M42 to L-mount Adapter because it's built like a tank. Unfortunately, the super cheap ones just feel like toys and the internal reflections can ruin your contrast. Stick to the mid-range brands and you'll be fine. gl!
Quick question—what camera body are you using? I usually just grab a $25 Haoge Lens Mount Adapter for Canon FD Lens to L-Mount Camera. Tbh it's always been solid. Is ur glass heavy??
sooo, welcome to the l-mount club! i've been messin around with vintage glass for like... ten years now? seriously, it's a rabbit hole. honestly, the price gap is real, but you definately dont always need to drop big bucks on those high-end novoflex ones. i mean, i've used the dirt cheap $20 ones and they're fine if you just wanna play around, but they kinda feel gritty sometimes and i have actually had light leaks on the mount side before. plus, that 'wiggle' you mentioned is the worst!! it's highkey annoying when you're trying to pull focus and the whole lens shifts. i've had a few cheap ones that felt loose on the camera mount, which is realy sketchy lol. for my current setup, i usually go with brands like K&F Concept or maybe Urth. they're basically the perfect middle ground—solid build, no wiggle, and no wierd internal reflections. i've been super satisfied with my K&F ones for M42 and FD glass, they just work well without the premium price tag. so basically, my tip is: skip the bottom-of-the-barrel stuff but dont feel like you HAVE to go premium unless you're a total pro. but yeah, i gotta ask... are you looking for something super sleek that matches the camera or just something functional? and how heavy are those FD lenses you picked up? cuz heavier glass definitely needs a more robust mount to avoid stress. anyway, gl with the search!
Like someone mentioned, the middle ground is usually the sweet spot for these things. I would suggest looking at the Urth M42 to L-Mount Lens Mount Adapter or their FD version. They're decently built, but honestly, be careful with internal reflections. Even mid-range adapters sometimes have shiny inner barrels that can tank your contrast when you've got light hitting the sensor at an angle. Tbh, I usually do a little DIY flocking on my gear. If you see any shiny bits inside the adapter, you might want to consider getting some ultra-black matte paint or some adhesive felt to line the interior. It helps a ton with flare. Also, make sure to check if your lenses hit infinity focus perfectly. Most adapters are machined slightly thin to be safe, which means you'll go past infinity. If you're up for it, you can actually shim the mount with some thin brass tape to get the distance scale spot on... takes a bit of trial and error but it's worth it for that precision feel.
