I just grabbed a Panasonic S5II and I'm loving the new autofocus! I’m looking to round out my kit for hybrid use. Should I prioritize V90 SD cards for 6K video, or are extra batteries more essential? Also, any recommendations for a cage that doesn't block the fan? What are your top essentials?

In my experience, buffering ruined many 6K shoots. I'd suggest ProGrade Digital SDXC UHS-II V90 128GB cards. Lesson learned: i think high-bitrate data basically requires v90 for stability tho.

Just found this thread and in my experience, the S5II is a beast but you gotta treat it right!! From a safety perspective, I’d prioritize the V90 cards first. If ur shooting 6K or high-bitrate All-I, using a slower card is basically asking for a data write error... and losing footage is the absolute worst. Heres my breakdown:
1. Sony SF-G Tough Series UHS-II V90 128GB: These are the gold standard for safety cuz there ribless and waterproof. Bit pricey but worth the peace of mind for ur data.
2. Panasonic DMW-BLK22 Lithium-Ion Battery: Extra power is key, but honestly I prefer a PD power bank for long 6K shoots to keep the internal voltage stable and temps low. 3. SmallRig Black Mamba Camera Cage for Panasonic LUMIX S5 II: I know a cage was mentioned already, but this specific one is great cuz it doesnt block the fan intake at all, which is CRITICAL for long-term reliability. IMO, grab the TOUGH cards first. Data integrity is highkey #1!! gl!

Also, any recommendations for a cage that doesn't block the fan? sooo i totally get the excitement!! i've been shooting with mine for months and its seriously incredible. honestly, prioritizing batteries is a MUST. The S5II is way more power-hungry than the original S5... i always carry three Panasonic DMW-BLK22 Lithium-Ion Battery (2200mAh) packs or i get range anxiety haha. About the cards... ngl, unless you’re doing heavy bit-rate ALL-I stuff, V60 is the sweet spot. I use the ProGrade Digital 256GB SDXC UHS-II V60 Gold Card and it handles 6K open gate like a boss. Save that V90 money for glass! For the cage, i highkey recommend the SmallRig Camera Cage for Panasonic LUMIX S5 II 4022. It’s literally built around the fan vents so there's no overheating issues at all. plus it feels great in the hand. Seriously amazing kit choice btw, youre gonna love it! 👍

Tbh I totally agree that power is the biggest hurdle with the S5II, but instead of just hoarding expensive batteries, Ive found a DIY power bank setup is way more efficient for hybrid work. Since the S5II supports USB-C Power Delivery, you can basically run it forever if you rig a bank to the side or top. Also, since you asked about the fan, keeping it clean yourself is way better than sending it to a service center for every little bit of dust. Heres what I use for a self-service kit:

Late to the party but honestly i was so nervous about frying my camera or losing data when i first got mine... i spent hours looking stuff up. tbh you should probably just do what i did and check the main sources to be safe.

  • check the official panasonic support site for their tested sd card list. it shows exactly which cards work for 6k so you dont have to worry about errors.
  • for the cages i saw a really good video on youtube about it once. just search s5ii cage fan test and it should be one of the first results... it shows which ones block the air.
  • if you want to do the diy power thing just search the lumix subreddit for s5ii power rig. there are a bunch of posts where people show their setups and what parts they used. let me know if you need more help finding that stuff... its kinda a lot to take in at first but you'll get there.
