Hey everyone! I finally pulled the trigger on the Panasonic S5IIX, and man, this thing is a powerhouse for video. Since I'm planning to lean heavily into the 5.8K ProRes recording to an external SSD, I really need to get a solid cage setup going to keep everything organized.
I’ve been looking at a few options, but I'm a bit torn. The SmallRig 'Black Mamba' looks incredibly sleek and ergonomic, but I’m worried it might not have enough mounting points for my top handle and monitor mount. On the other hand, the Tilta cage seems really robust and offers great protection, but I've heard some people say it can be a bit bulky for smaller hands. My main concern is heat dissipation—I want to make sure the cage doesn't block those active cooling vents or the access to the battery door and HDMI ports.
Has anyone here tried both? I’m specifically looking for something that handles cable management well, especially for the USB-C cable going to the SSD. I don’t want to risk snapping a port during a busy shoot! Also, how is the clearance around the top dials?
Which cage are you guys currently using for your S5IIX, and would you recommend it for a fast-paced, run-and-gun documentary setup?
Totally agree! For safety, grab the Nitze Panasonic S5IIX Full Rig with PE21 Cable Clamp. It’s amazingly sturdy and that clamp basically guarantees your SSD wont disconnect mid-shot. Safety first!!
yo, choosing a cage for the S5IIX is tricky cuz of the SSD setup. the SmallRig Black Mamba Series Cage for Panasonic LUMIX S5 II / S5 IIX is sleek but tbh mounting is tight. for prores ssd recording, i'd go with the Tilta Full Camera Cage for Panasonic S5 II / S5 IIX - Black. it has better cable clamps to save ur ports. heat isnt an issue for either cage... get the tilta, it’s basically built for doc work. gl!!
Late to the party but I went through this exact same headache last year when I started rigging up my S5IIX for 5.8K ProRes workflow. Honestly, the heat thing is a valid concern, but luckily the active cooling vents on this body are pretty well-placed. I was super paranoid about blocking the intake/exhaust, so I spent way too much time measuring clearances. I actually ended up trying a few different setups because I needed a rock-solid cable clamp for my Samsung T7 Shield 4TB Portable SSD. Since the Black Mamba and Tilta were already mentioned, here is what I found with some alternatives I tested: * Kondor Blue Panasonic Lumix S5II/S5IIX Cage: This was my "pro" choice. The cable management is highkey the best I've used. It has dedicated HDMI and USB-C clamps that actually PROTECT the ports rather than just holding the cable. It’s pricier, but for fast-paced doc work, it felt indestructible. Plus, the built-in level is a nice touch.
* SmallRig Camera Cage for Panasonic LUMIX S5 II / S5 IIX 3984: This is the standard one, not the Mamba. It is basically the workhorse version. It has way more 1/4"-20 mounting points than the Mamba, so you wont have issues with ur top handle and monitor mount. It is a bit more industrial-looking, but it gets the job done for less cash. tbh, make sure ur SSD mount doesn't sit right over the top fan exhaust. I noticed some top-heavy setups can trap heat if youre not careful with the mounting plate layout. Anyway, just sharing my journey... I almost ripped a port once with a loose cable, so whatever you pick, just make sure those clamps are tight. gl with the build!
Ok so, when you're dealing with external recording, you have to understand that the physical connection is your biggest fail point. Basically, the cage you pick is just the foundation, but the REAL priority is *data integrity*. If that USB-C port wiggles even a fraction of a millimeter during a 5.8K ProRes write, your file is toast. I've seen it happen on pro sets and it's a total nightmare. Check out the 'CineD' database or the 'RigWheels' site for some modular inspiration; they're great resources for seeing how to mount SSDs without blocking those cooling vents. Those fans are *literally* the lifeblood of that sensor during high-bitrate takes. TL;DR: Prioritize port security and fan clearance over aesthetics. Port repairs are expensive!! Quick questions tho—what's your actual budget for the full rig? And are you planning to use a V-mount battery or just sticking to internals? gl!
