Recommended Leica M battery and charger accessories?

I just picked up a Leica M and I’m trying to sort out a reliable spare battery + charger setup for travel and long shooting days. Are there any third‑party batteries you actually trust, or is OEM the only safe bet? Also looking for a compact USB-C/dual charger that won’t overheat—what accessories do you recommend?

Ok so battery safety matters a ton on Leicas cuz the camera’s basically trusting the pack’s protection board… a sketchy cell can swell, misreport %, or just die mid-day (been there, mood). For travel I still lean OEM for at least one “known good” spare, then add a reputable 3rd-party if you really want.

Here’s what I’d do:
- Battery: Patona Platinum Leica BP-SCL2 compatible Li-Ion Battery 7.4V 1800mAh (I think it’s one of the better-built options)
- Charger (USB-C, compact): Nitecore UNK2 USB-C Dual-Slot Charger for Leica BP-SCL2 (good thermals, doesn’t feel like a toaster lol)
- Tiny safety add-on: Anker PowerPort III 20W USB-C Charger + a short USB-C cable

And yeah… label your packs + rotate them, seriously helps. gl!

Not to disagree, but OEM isn’t the only “safe” bet if you buy smart. I’ve run 3rd‑party cells for years with zero drama, but ONLY from big-name power brands—Hähnel HL-LM14 Li-Ion Battery (Leica BP-SCL2 compatible, 7.4V) has been decent for me. For travel, a Nitecore ULM240 USB Dual-Slot Charger for Leica M Batteries + a known-good USB-C PD brick keeps temps sane (dont use sketchy fast chargers, seriously).

Honestly I stumbled upon this discussion and had to chime in because I spent way too much time testing voltage drop-off and internal resistance on these cells because I'm obsessed with how the camera's logic board talks to the battery and I actually started looking into how to DIY the internal cells themselves. Most people just buy whatever but I found that if you really want reliability you should look at brands that focus on professional video power solutions rather than just generic camera accessory brands because their quality control is on a different level. I've had way better luck researching how to service the packs myself or just going with high-end power brands that cater to the cinema crowd and it's SO much better than worrying about some cheap knockoff failing mid-shoot. Just get any charger or battery from SmallRig and you'll be fine tho

Solid advice 👍

In my experience, the “battery + charger” question is mostly about risk management. Leica M bodies are picky about voltage/communication, and a flaky cell can mess up a whole travel day (or worse, swell). I tried saving money with a couple third‑party packs early on… one had noticeably worse capacity and the other got warm enough that I stopped trusting it. After that I just treated OEM as the baseline cost of ownership, even if it stings up front.

For charging, I’ve had the best luck with a compact USB‑C dual charger that does proper temp monitoring and slows down when it needs to (cheap ones just keep pushing current). I also stopped charging in direct sun / inside a hot bag—sounds obvious, but it mattered. My current setup is 2–3 batteries + a dual USB‑C charger + a decent PD power bank, and it’s been boringly reliable. gl!

Ok so… for Leica M stuff I’m kinda conservative, but I also get the travel/budget pain. If you can swing it, I’d make ONE of your spares OEM and then *maybe* add a cheaper backup. Like: 2 batteries total is the sweet spot.

For batteries: I’ve had decent luck with Wasabi Power BP-SCL2 Battery for Leica Q/Q2/SL/SL2 (usually like $20–$30). It’s not magic, capacity feels a bit lower vs OEM, but it hasn’t done anything sketchy for me. I’d avoid the ultra-no-name listings cuz swelling/overheat is the nightmare scenario.

For chargers: the little dual USB chargers are convenient but can run warm if you fast-charge two at once. I’d suggest Watson Duo LCD Charger for Leica BP-SCL2 with USB-C Input (often ~$30–$40). It’s compact, shows status, and you can run it off a USB-C PD brick. If you wanna be extra safe, charge one battery at a time (less heat, less drama).

Also: grab a decent USB-C PD wall charger (Anker/etc) you already own, and dont use random airplane-seat USB ports for charging… those are cursed lol. What exact M model did you pick up? Battery type changes the whole answer
