Hey everyone! I finally picked up a Leica Q2 recently, and while I’m absolutely in love with the image quality and the minimalist design, I’m finding the ergonomics a bit challenging for long days of street photography. The body is quite sleek, and I sometimes feel like I don’t have a secure enough hold on it, especially when I’m trying to shoot one-handed or navigate through busy areas. I’ve been looking into getting a thumb grip to help with stability, but I’m a bit overwhelmed by the options available.

I know Leica makes an official branded grip, but the price tag is pretty steep for what it is. I’ve seen some third-party alternatives from brands like Match Technical (the Thumbs Up series) and Haoge, but I have a few concerns. I’m specifically worried about whether the cheaper versions fit snugly in the hot shoe or if they tend to wiggle over time. Also, I’ve heard some grips can accidentally block access to the rear thumb dial or make it harder to reach the buttons. Since the Q2 is such a beautiful piece of gear, I definitely want something that matches the finish and doesn't cause any scratching. For those of you who use one, does the official Leica grip justify the cost, or is there a specific third-party alternative that you’d say is a must-buy for the Q2?

Just found this thread! Honestly, the ergonomics on the Q2 are basically like holding a wet bar of soap lol. For your situation, I would suggest looking at the technical specs of how these things actually mount because fitment is everything. - Leica Thumb Support Q2 (19543): It's machined from solid brass. The finish matches the camera perfectly and it fits the hot shoe with zero wiggle. - Match Technical Thumbs Up EP-SQ2: This is the enthusiast favorite. Also brass, but the ergonomic curve is slightly better for one-handed shooting than the Leica one, iirc.
- Haoge THB-QB Metal Thumb Rest: It's aluminum, so it's lighter and way cheaper. But technical tolerances are looser... you might need a tiny bit of tape to stop it from sliding around. Personally, I'd go with the Match Technical Thumbs Up EP-SQ2. It has a silicone insert so it wont scratch the finish and it's shaped to clear the dial perfectly. gl!!

sooo, i've been shooting with leica gear for like 15 years now, and honestly, the ergonomics 'struggle' is basically a rite of passage lol. you're totally right about the q2 feeling like a sleek piece of soap—it's gorgeous but can be pretty nerve-wracking to hold one-handed in a crowd. For your situation, I've found that you don't actually need to drop $200+ on the official leica support to get a rock-solid feel. I've been using the JJC TA-Q2 Thumbs Up Grip for Leica Q2 for over two years on my daily carries and I'm super satisfied with how it's held up. Here's why I'd suggest going with a high-quality budget option:
1. The Pad Trick: Most decent third-party grips like the JJC or even the Haoge THB-QB Thumb Grip for Leica Q2 have a tiny silicone or rubber pad on the underside. This is what stops the scratching and that annoying 'wiggle' in the hot shoe you're worried about.
2. Dial Clearance: A well-designed grip is curved specifically to keep the rear thumb dial accessible. The JJC is actually reallyyy good at this; it doesn't block my flow at all.
3. Finishing: While leica's own gear is a perfect match, the matte finish on the JJC is sooo close you barely notice the difference unless you're looking for it. In my experience, the official grip is mostly about paying for the brand name. If you want something that works well and feels secure without the leica tax, the JJC TA-Q2 Thumbs Up Grip for Leica Q2 is basically the way to go. it's what i tell everyone to start with. gl!!

So I’ve only had my Q2 for about a year now, and ngl I had the exact same 'bar of soap' feeling when I first got it. I was super nervous about those third-party ones scratching the finish since I’m still kinda learning the ropes with Leica gear lol. Tbh, I ended up going with the IDS Works Modular Grip for Leica Q2 and I’ve been really happy with it over the last few months. It's a bit of an investment compared to the super cheap ones, but it feels really solid and hasn't wiggled at all. I actually think the way it integrates with the base makes the whole thing feel way more secure for long days. I mean, I'm no expert, but I feel like the extra weight actually helps with my stability when shooting? Or maybe I'm just imagining it. Anyway, it definitely made me stop worrying about dropping the camera every time I’m in a crowd. It's held up great for the long term so far, hope that helps ur decision!

1. In my experience, I totally get it—the Q2 is basically a bar of soap lol.
2. i actually tried a cheap brand first but it scratched my hot shoe and felt super loose... basically a nightmare.
3. eventually i got the one i have now and it totally fixed the ergonomics without blocking any dials or buttons.
4. tbh, i learned that investing in a solid one makes one-handed shooting way easier! gl!

In my experience, i had a real nightmare with a cheap grip that actually bent my hot shoe pins... honestly so disappointing. I learned the hard way that safety matters way more than saving money on a $5k camera. Basically, look for:
- Solid tension so it wont wiggle
- Rubber padding to avoid scratches
- Dial clearance The one i finally got feels way safer. Gl!

Same setup here, love it
