What are the best prime lenses for a Micro Four Thirds camera if I am going on a big trip? I just bought an Olympus camera—the OM-D E-M10 Mark IV i think—because everyone said it was good for beginners but I am totally lost and honestly a little panicked because I leave for Japan in three weeks. It came with a little pancake zoom lens thingy but my friend said I need a prime lens for better photos at night but I dont even really know what that means exactly. Like do I have to keep switching them all the time? That sounds like a huge pain if I am walking around Tokyo and trying to see everything.
Im looking for something that wont break the bank because I spent most of my savings on the flight and the camera itself so maybe like 500 dollars max for everything? Or even less if thats possible. I want my photos to look like those blurry background ones you see on Instagram but every time I try with the lens I have it just looks flat and boring and kind of dark if I am inside a restaurant or a temple. Someone mentioned a 25mm lens or a 17mm lens but what is the difference really? Does the number mean it zooms more? I am so sorry if these are really stupid questions I just really dont want to mess up my vacation photos because I probably wont get to go back for years.
Also I am really worried about carrying too much stuff because I am only taking a backpack and I dont want to be that tourist fumbling with gear while everyone else is walking. I really just want to keep it simple. Here is what I think I need but I might be wrong:
I saw some from Panasonic and some from Olympus and someone said they work on each others cameras but that sounds fake?? Can I actually put a Panasonic lens on my Olympus camera without it breaking or the colors looking weird? I just need something simple that makes my pictures look professional without me having to study for a degree in photography before I get on the plane... I dont even know where to start looking...
Building on the earlier suggestion, I absolutely love finding budget-friendly gems! You dont need to spend a fortune to get that professional look. Sigma makes fantastic glass that is amazing for low light.
Building on the earlier suggestion, I actually think you should skip the middle ground. In my experience, 25mm is often way too tight for narrow Tokyo streets. I have tried many combos and these two work way better:
Dont worry about being a tourist fumbling with gear—I was exactly the same when I started! First off, yeah, Panasonic and Olympus use the same Micro Four Thirds mount, so they are totally interchangeable. I have used Panny lenses on my Oly body for years and honestly they work perfectly together. No complaints here. If you want that blurry background and good night shots without carrying a ton, these are the ones I am super happy with:
