im so lost right now with this camera thing i bought an olympus om-d e-m10 mark iv because people said it was small and easy but im struggling so much with taking photos inside. every time i try to take a picture of my kids in the living room they come out either super dark or just a big blurry mess and i think i need a flash but when i look online all the flashes are massive. like they look bigger than the actual camera which totally defeats the point of having a tiny camera right? i started looking at stuff like guide numbers and ttl and i honestly have no clue what any of that means its like a different language and im getting really frustrated because i just want to take some nice pictures. im going to maine next month for a big family reunion and i really want to capture some memories in the cabin we rented but i only have about 100 dollars left to spend on gear so i cant get anything fancy. sorry if this is a dumb question but i have no idea where to start or what brands even fit on my camera. does anyone know a small flash that wont break the bank or be too heavy for my hands to hold all day? i just need something simple that works with the olympus system and isnt a total nightmare to set up...
> i just want to take some nice pictures. To help, are the ceilings in this cabin white or dark wood? I'm very satisfied with the Meike MK-320 TTL Speedlite for Olympus. It supports TTL, or Through-The-Lens metering. Essentially, the camera and flash communicate to calculate exposure automatically. This helps freeze motion so the kids dont come out blurry. Its methodical, compact, and fits your budget perfectly without being heavy.
I feel your pain with the bulky gear struggle. When I first started with m43 cameras, I bought this massive pro flash and it literally made my wrist ache after twenty minutes. Kind of defeats the whole point of a small system, right? You really want something with TTL tho. It basically means the camera does all the hard work for you so you arent messing with settings while the kids are running around. In my experience, these two are your best bets for staying under budget:
^ This. Also, Noah and DoodleJoy pretty much nailed it with the Godox and Meike recommendations. Those are definitely the standard budget picks for staying light. In my experience though, the build quality on those can feel a bit like a toy. I’ve tried many small setups over the years and I honestly think you should look for a used Nissin i40 for Micro Four Thirds. You can usually find them for under 100 bucks and they feel much more solid. It has physical dials on the back so you wont have to mess with the camera screen while the kids are running around, which is a huge plus when you're stressed and just want the shot. Quick tip for the cabin: if the ceilings are dark wood, dont bounce the flash off them or everyone will look orange lol. Just point it forward but use a cheap plastic diffuser to soften the light so it doesnt look like a deer in headlights situation...
> im only have about 100 dollars left to spend on gear Unfortunately your budget is super tight for high quality gear. Most cheap units feel like toys. Just get the Godox TT350O Mini Thinklite TTL Flash for Olympus. Its not as powerful as id like with a guide number of 36 but it fits that e-m10 perfectly. Had issues with the recycle speed on AA batteries tho so use good ones.
