I’ve been getting more into birding and wildlife photography lately and absolutely love the M4/3 system for that 2x crop factor reach. However, I’m currently using a basic kit zoom and finding it lacks the sharpness and speed I need for fast-moving subjects. I’ve been researching the Olympus 300mm f/4 IS Pro and the Leica 100-400mm, but I’m torn between the flexibility of a zoom and the sheer quality of a prime. Since I often hike in damp conditions, weather sealing is a must-have for me. Given a budget of around $1,500–$2,000, which lens would you say offers the best balance of reach, autofocus speed, and image quality for handheld wildlife shooting?

After years shooting, the Olympus M.Zuiko Digital ED 100-400mm f/5.0-6.3 IS wins on value, but the Panasonic Leica DG Vario-Elmar 100-400mm f/4.0-6.3 II ASPH. POWER O.I.S. is basically sharper if you find a deal tho.

Sooo I just found this thread and I totally feel u! Last summer, I was struggling so hard with my basic zoom at the local lake, and honestly, every single bird was just a blurry blob lol. I finally saved up for the Olympus M.Zuiko Digital ED 300mm f/4.0 IS PRO and the sharpness is LITERALLY insane compared to kit glass. It’s a bit heavy but the weather sealing is rock solid for those damp hikes you mentioned!
Check out the 'Mirrorless Comparison' website—they have amazing technical charts and side-by-side tests for these exact lenses which helped me a ton.
Pro tip: Stick to the same brand for lens and body to get 'Sync IS' or 'Dual IS' support. It’s a total game-changer for shooting handheld wildlife without a tripod! gl!
