I am in a bit of a panic because I finally booked my dream trip to Yellowstone for the second week of next month and I still havent settled on a long zoom for my D850. I've been using a 70-200 for basically everything but I know that is not gonna cut it for wolves or bears at a distance. I have been doing a ton of reading and I keep seeing people recommend the Nikon 200-500mm f/5.6 as the gold standard for the price but then I go on other forums and people are saying the zoom throw is way too long and the autofocus is too slow for birds or anything moving fast. Then I looked at the Tamron 150-600mm G2 which seems way more versatile with that extra reach but I am worried about the quality control issues and if it can actually resolve enough detail for the D850s 45 megapixel sensor... I dont want to spend three grand on a lens and then realize everything is soft when I get home and look at them on a big screen.
I really need to figure this out in the next few days so I can actually find one in stock or buy a used one and test it before I leave. Here is what I am looking for:
Is the Nikon 200-500 actually that much better than the third party stuff or should I be looking at the Sigma 150-600 Sport? I heard the Sport is a tank but maybe too heavy? I am just super confused about which one is actually going to perform best on a high res body like mine without breaking my back or my bank account...
For hiking in Yellowstone, you definitely want to avoid the heavy Sport version! Here is a comparison of what works best for your budget:
Omg you are going to have the best time!! Yellowstone is literally life-changing. I went through the exact same stress when I got my Nikon D850 and realized my shorter lenses just werent gonna cut it for wolves. I ended up grabbing a big zoom used right before I left and honestly, it was the best decision I ever made! I remember standing in Lamar Valley in the freezing rain and being so relieved that my gear could handle the moisture. The weight was definitely a struggle during the long hikes tho... my shoulders were killing me! But being able to crop in and see the breath coming off a bison was just incredible. I learned that having that extra reach is totally worth the extra weight. I dont regret the heavy bag at all. Youre gonna have such a blast!
