So I finally pulled the trigger and moved from my D850 to a Z8 last month and everything was great until I started testing my lighting setup. Im kinda panicking because my old third party flashes that worked fine on the DSLR are being super glitchy with the Z system. The TTL exposure is just... totally inconsistent? One shot is blown out and the next is pitch black even when I dont change my distance. Plus I just realized the AF assist beam on the flashes doesnt even work with mirrorless sensors which I guess is a thing now but it's making low light focusing a nightmare for me.
I have a big corporate event in Chicago in three weeks and I need to replace these before then. I've been doing event photography for nearly 10 years so I know the basics but this technical hiccup with the Z mount communication is new to me. Here is what I am looking for:
Should I just bite the bullet and get the SB-5000 or are the newer Godox V1 units actually reliable enough for professional work on the Z cameras? I keep hearing mixed things about the firmware updates. What are you guys using that doesnt cause these weird exposure jumps?
I've tried many setups over the years and the Nikon SB-5000 AF Speedlight is the gold standard for your Z8. The Godox V1-N Round Head Flash is great for the price and the battery life is insane, but the TTL still feels slightly off compared to native gear. TL;DR: Get the Nikon SB-5000 AF Speedlight for total reliability or the Godox V1-N Round Head Flash if you want the round head features.
Totally agree that native is usually safest, but I've had an amazing time with these newer units! I was so nervous at a wedding last month when my old gear started glitching... total nightmare.
Saw this and wanted to weigh in since I went through the same headache when I got my Z8. Mirrorless just doesnt play nice with those old red AF grids, so you gotta rely on the white LED lights now. If the V1 or the top-tier Nikon stuff isnt hitting the mark, you might like the Godox V860III-N TTL Li-Ion Flash. It uses that same beefy lithium battery as the V1 so recycle times are lightning fast, but it has the standard rectangular head which feels a bit more rugged for heavy event work. Ngl the battery life on these is a lifesaver for long weddings. Another one to look at is the Westcott FJ80 II M Universal Speedlight. Its a bit more niche but the TTL communication with Nikon is super stable... arguably more consistent than Godox in my experience. The color temp is really steady too which helps a ton in post-processing. TL;DR: The V860III is the way to go for raw speed and battery longevity, but the Westcott FJ80 II is better if you want a cleaner UI and more reliable TTL logic.
