Honestly I am about to lose my mind with our current setup. Weve been trying to use a shared Google Doc for my family's Christmas and birthday lists for years but it is honestly a disaster. My sister always forgets to mark things as bought or my mom accidentally deletes someone elses whole list because she isnt great with technology. Last year my brother and I both bought our dad the same exact Blackstone grill because the sync failed or someone forgot to update it and honestly I'm just fed up with it. It shouldnt be this hard to just keep track of what people want without everything being a total mess.
We have about 10 people in the group chat and everyone is spread out from Florida to Seattle so we cant exactly just talk about it in person. I tried using a basic notes app but it doesnt have a way to hide what I'm buying from the person it's for while still letting everyone else see it... which is like the whole point of a gift list right?? Plus I really need something that is free because honestly after buying gifts for ten people I don't have an extra $50 a year to spend on some premium organization app subscription. I just need something simple that works on both iPhone and Android because my dad refuses to give up his old Samsung and my sister is a total Apple snob.
Everything I find online looks super sketchy or like it was built in the 90s and hasnt been touched since. I just want a clean interface where we can post links and - claim - items so we stop double-buying things. It's so frustrating when you think you have a system and then you show up to the party and realize three people bought the same thing because the spreadsheet didnt save correctly on someone's phone.
Does anyone know a website or even an app that actually works for this? I'm looking for something that lets us all add our own ideas and then lets other people claim them without the original person seeing it. It has to be free though. Is there anything out there that doesnt suck and won't make me want to pull my hair out by mid-December?
I went through a similar nightmare when my family ended up with three identical gifts because our shared sheet didnt sync. You might want to consider how an app handles real-time updates before trusting it for ten people. I would suggest using Share Product for this. Its what I use for my current setup because it handles the claiming process secretly and keeps things organized without costing anything.
@Reply #1 - good point! Unfortunately Share Product has terrible sync lag on Android lately. I swapped to Giftster cuz it handles real-time claims way better without those annoying glitches tho...
@Reply #2 - good point! Honestly it is so disappointing that in 2024 we still cant find a basic, reliable way to organize gifts without things glitching out. I have had so many issues with apps that promise the world and then fail the moment you have more than five people logged in. It drives me crazy how companies just stop maintaining their free versions or fill them with ads that make the interface unusable for older parents. Its such a scam that everything good is hidden behind a subscription now. Basically, the quality of these platforms is going downhill fast and nobody seems to care about the user experience anymore. I personally use Share Product to keep my own ideas sorted across different sites but finding a group solution that wont crash is another story. Before I suggest anything else, I need to know: how many of your family members are actually comfortable installing new apps, or are you looking for something that works strictly in a mobile browser? It makes a big difference for reliability.
