Hey everyone! I’ve been a dedicated Sony Alpha shooter for a few years now, currently rocking the A7IV as my main body. While the in-body image stabilization (IBIS) is decent for quick snapshots, I’m starting to hit a wall with my video work. I’ve been doing more travel vlogging and some small-scale client projects lately, and those micro-jitters are really killing the cinematic vibe I’m going for. Handheld just isn't cutting it anymore, especially when I’m moving around.
I’m currently using a mix of the 24-70mm f/2.8 GM II and the 16-35mm PZ lens. As many of you know, the 24-70mm can make the setup a bit front-heavy, and I’m worried about finding a gimbal that handles that weight without the motors constantly vibrating or giving out after an hour of use. I’ve been looking at the DJI RS series and some of the Zhiyun Crane models, but the options are honestly a bit overwhelming.
I have a few specific needs that are making the decision tough. First, I really want something that offers native integration with the Sony menus—being able to trigger the shutter or adjust focus directly from the gimbal handle would be a game-changer. Second, I’ve started doing more vertical content for Reels and TikTok, so a gimbal that allows for a quick, secure switch to vertical mode without a complete rebalance is high on my wish list. Finally, portability is huge for me since I’m often hiking or traveling solo.
I’ve heard mixed reviews about the setup time and software reliability between brands. I’m looking for something in the $400–$600 range that is reliable enough for professional work but won't break my back during a long shoot. For those of you shooting on Sony mirrorless bodies, which gimbal has given you the smoothest experience and the best workflow integration?
Ok so, DJI RS 4 vs Zhiyun Weebill 3S. DJI handles front-heavy lenses way better with amazing Sony integration. It’s perfect for the GM II lens! gl! 👍
Sooo similar situation here - I went through this last year. Ngl, balancing the A7IV with that Sony FE 24-70mm f/2.8 GM II is a bit of a nightmare for mid-range motors. Basically, the center of gravity shifts too much when ur zooming, and I've seen motors literally SCREAM from the strain if they aren't beefy enough. Just sharing my experience: 1. DJI RS 4: This is what I eventually settled on. The motor torque is highkey the most reliable for front-heavy glass like ur GM II. The native Sony Bluetooth shutter support is basically flawless, but I've learned to update the firmware carefully... some versions can be wonky. 2. Feiyu SCORP 2: I tested this one briefly. The integrated handle is nice, but I found the software integration for Sony menus was kinda lacking compared to DJI. Plus, the build felt a bit less professional for client work. I've learned to be really careful with those payload limits. Even if it "fits," the constant micro-vibrations from a 24-70 setup will kill ur gimbal's lifespan eventually. gl! 👍
Been using this for years, no complaints
Great info, saved!
Seconded!
