Top recommended external flash for Sony mirrorless camera systems?

Hey everyone! I recently made the jump to a Sony A7 series mirrorless setup, and while I’m loving the image quality, I’ve realized my current lighting kit is seriously lacking. I’m looking for a solid external flash that plays well with the Sony Multi-Interface Shoe. I do quite a bit of event photography and some indoor portraits, so reliable TTL and High-Speed Sync (HSS) are must-haves for me. I’ve seen people rave about the Godox V1 for its round head, but I’m also wondering if I should just stick with native Sony options like the HVL-F60RM2 for better compatibility. What would you recommend for someone who needs a balance of power and portability? Any specific models that are total game-changers for your Sony workflow?

Hmm, I've had a different experience. Sony's MI shoe is delicate; heavy units often snap those pins. Ngl, I've had issues with gear failing...

- Godox TT685II-S Flash for Sony ($130)

Way cheaper and safer!

Hmm, I've had a different experience. So, basically the thing with Sony's Multi-Interface shoe is those tiny pins at the front... they're super delicate. Most "misfiring" issues with third-party stuff like Godox actually come from the flash not being seated quite right or the shoe being slightly loose on the camera body, not necessarily the flash being a dud.

Respectfully, I'd consider another option before dropping over $500 on the native Sony. I've been shooting Sony for like 8 years now, and while the Sony HVL-F60RM2 is a beast, it's highkey overpriced for many event shooters.

If you really want that round head but need more reliability than the original V1, definitely look at the Godox V1Pro-S Flash for Sony. They actually fixed the thermal issues and the metal shoe mount is way sturdier. Another solid choice is the Westcott FJ80 II M Universal 80Ws Speedlight. It plays very nice with Sony's TTL and the interface is way more intuitive. Just make sure to keep your contacts clean, cuz that MI shoe is a magnet for dust which causes those misfires, right? anyway gl with the choice!

The discussion so far is spot on about the MI shoe being the weak link here. Its really disappointing how Sony designed such a fragile interface for professional work. I have had issues with heavy flashes literally loosening the screws inside my camera body from the constant leverage. Not as good as expected for the price honestly. To avoid snapping pins or getting those annoying accessory not supported errors, I suggest looking at smaller gear:

  • Godox V350S Li-Ion Compact Flash is much lighter but still has that great lithium battery.
  • Sony HVL-F28RM External Flash if you want native reliability without the massive weight. Ngl, my real DIY fix was switching to a bracket or just using a Godox XPro-S TTL Wireless Flash Trigger to keep the weight off the camera entirely. If you must mount on-camera, check the four tiny screws under the springs in your camera shoe... I bet they are already loose. Tighten them carefully with a precision driver and it stops half the misfiring issues people usually blame on the flash itself.

In my experience, I unfortunately had issues with Godox V1-S Flash for Sony misfiring... it wasnt as good as expected. Honestly, Sony HVL-F60RM2 Wireless Radio Flash is safer if you dont wanna risk it?

Quick question—the MI shoe is actually super fragile, which I learned when my old setup literally snapped. Are you shooting mostly on-camera or off? Tbh it really depends on your needs

My buddy told me the exact same thing last week. Guess he was right lol.
